Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree writes great stuff, and Ian Curtis sure wrote some brilliant songs too. I also completely second Timo's mention of Neil Finn, and Bono created some incredible lyrics between 1984 and 1997.

Ian McCulloch the U2 fan:
"Who buys U2 records anyway? It's just music for plumbers and bricklayers. Bono, what a slob. You'd think with all that climbing about he does, he'd look real fit and that. But he's real fat, y'know. Reminds me of a soddin' mountain goat."
"And as for Bono, he needs a colostomy bag for his mouth."

I'm disturbed by the lack of Cohen love here.

I definitely forgot about Leonard Cohen.

I think he's about the only one out there who can give Dylan a run for his money.

lyrics of "Free Until They Cut Me Down" are beautiful

"When the sea takes me like my mother’s arms
I will breathe free as any word of God"

amazing!

I like many songwriters (Bono, Jeff Tweedy, Jamie Stewart, Sifjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart, etc.), but definitely Sam Beam is my favorite

I think Tom Waits is right up there myself.
