On July 1, 2006 - exactly 16 months ago - the idea of an Interference Best Beatles Song Survivor was introduced. It was thought that it would take until January of 2007 to complete. However, as it does with so many other things, life got in the way. Delays, lengthy draws, and occasional forgetfulness have made this competition a long and sprawling one. But we can now smell the scent of its completion.
And as our mouths water with that scent and our hearts beat in anticpation of crossing the proverbial finish line, we also look back on the last few rounds of this Final Draw and we see just how difficult it was to eliminate any of these final 5 or 6 songs. In fact, at many points during this competition, it wasn't any easier.
And perhaps that is what we should ultimately take away from this - that the reason it was and is often so difficult to eliminate songs in this competition is because of the depth and quality of the catalog we're looking at. Perhaps this isn't about winners and losers, but about gaining a new appreciation of just how good this body of work is. Of how these songs are ingrained in our consciousness for all time. And of how our great-grandchildren might just be playing this music for their great-grandchildren.
This IS, however, a competition, and every competition must have an ultimate victor.
