Wow nice list, JITB. Really nice looking album covers.

I'm listening to 'Molotov' by The Ascent of Everest on their myspace now because I like the album cover. I really like it. Glacial.

Was already mentioned but this is my pick

Ray LaMontagne - Till The Sun Turns Black

Haunting voice, I love it. I'm seeing him live soon and I can't wait to see how he measures up live, I hope I won't be disappointed.

Plus he's from Maine and when do you ever hear great singers who come from Maine Born In NH too

I fear the people who complained about no good music need to give themselves a new music allowance, which is either cash or time or bandwidth or gigabytes on the hard drive or some magickal combination of all of the above.

I used to smoke cigarettes. Now, I simply spend the rough equivalent on CDs. And I love to go to the store and linger and look as opposed to ordering them or downloading them. I love the new CD smell. I love the challenge of getting all the extra wrapping off.

1.Tool—10,000 Days
2.The Killers—Sam's Town
3.Red Hot Chili Peppers—Stadium Arcadium
4.Black Angels—Jerusalem
5.My Morning Jacket—Okokonos
6.The Flaming Lips—At War with the Mystics
7.TV On the Radio—Return to Cookie Mountain
8.Michael Franti & Spearhead—Yell Fire!
9.Ben Harper—Both Sides of the Gun
10.Gnarls Barkley—St. Elsewhere
11.The Black Keys—Magic Potion
12.Scissor Sisters—Ta Dah
13.The Strokes—First Impressions of Earth
14.Snow Patrol—Eyes Open
15.Thom Yorke—The Eraser
16.Espers—Espers II
17.Damien Rice—9
18.Sean Lennon—Friendly Fire
19.Goldfrapp—Supernature
20.Matisyahu—Youth
21.The Alarm—Under Attack
22.Bruce Springsteen—We Shall Overcome: the Seeger Sessions
23.Keane—Under the Iron Sea
24.Wolfmother—Wolfmother
25.Pearl Jam—Pearl Jam
26.Cat Power—The Greatest
27.Dresden Dolls—Yes, Virginia
28.Peaches—Impeach My Bush
29.Madonna—Confessions on a Dancefloor
30.Live—Songs from Black Mountain
31.Raconteurs—Broken Boy Soldiers
32.Sonic Youth—Rather Ripped

36.Sarah McLachlan—Wintersong
37.Muse—Black Holes & Revelations
38.The Mars Volta—Amputechture

Good. Someone posted a list of 50 best, so I don't have to feel guilty about the time I spent compiling the Anu Top 40.

Yes, and I forgot Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.

I need to listen to the Joanna Newsom and Decemberists some more. I like the people who like these.

I should have stuck it out and gone for 50. Before 12-31, I easily could have had 50 -- especially after I comb through these lists and go out and buy more music.

There weren't too many albums released this year that stood out for me, until in November I got round to buying Beirut's debut album 'Gulag Orkestar'. As a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel's 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea', I'd read the reviews with intrigue, and loved the idea of what Zach Condon was trying to do. And then, I listened to the album. It's a fabulous tour de force through some imaginary Europe where Balkan sounds mix with German landscapes through Bratislavan side streets, where the ancient meets the modern (see 'Scenic World'), and where the listener is transported from the simple confines of western pop to a fresh and invogorating sound. A superb album and one that reveals more and more with each listen. Throw in the Lon Gisland EP with the re-release and you've got one of the albums of the decade thus far.
Stand-out tracks: 'The Gulag Orkestar', 'Postcards From Italy', 'Bratislava' (from 'Gulag Orkestar') and the new version of 'Scenic World' from the Lon Gisland EP.
