Best Album of the Decade?

With only 3 short years left to the 2000's, less than a third of the decade left, it's not long now until we can look back at the decade as a whole and evalute its ups and downs much like we do with the 90's, 80's, and every decade before them. So, with 70% of the decade here and gone, do any of you think we've already seen the best album of the decade? That one album that when you think of the 2000's you're going to say, oh man, that was the decade that gave us The Darkness and Permission to Land (kidding, I hope to God no one would ever say something like that and then drool.

But you get the idea. Have we seen the best album of the decade yet. And if so, what was it?

I don't know if we've already seen the very best the 2000's has to offer, but so far, this has been my #1.

Sea Change - Beck

This album moves me to no end. Beck's own "Blood on the Tracks" and the true definition of a modern masterpiece and an instand classic.

Best I've heard yet is Funeral by Arcade Fire. Yoshimi by the Flaming Lips is close.

I do believe this album moves you to no end, but it's not a masterpiece
perhaps the most boring album Beck ever released - yes
Permission to Land on the other hand is one of the most fun albums I've had the pleasure to listen to


I'd have to check my collection to see what was released in the noughties
but I fear it might actually be All that you can't leave behind that would get my vote

Not sure if the very best has come along yet, but those that certainly do stick out as being good markers for the times to me are:

Green Day - American Idiot
Coldplay - A rush of blood to the head
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations or Absolution (I'm undecided which one here)
The White Stripes - Elephant

I have much love for Beck, and that is possibly the best album of the 00's.

Aerial by Kate Bush

There have been a lot of great albums in this decade but this one rises to the top in my book. Superb songwriting with almost every song being among Kate's best. It is an utter masterpeice.

It's very hard to choose. Pure Reason Revolution's The Dark Third, Opeth's Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries, Agalloch's The Mantle and Ashes Against The Grain, Blackfield II, and Porcupine Tree's In Absentia and Deadwing are all right up there.

Kid A, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Funeral are all certainly worthy and I'm glad to see them mentioned multiple times. I'd also throw in Bloc Party's Silent Alarm. I think it's the best debut album since...ever

there are so many other good albums...Interpol's Turn On the Bright Lights, Tool's Lateralus, A Rush of Blood to the Head, Dredg's El Cielo, Hot Fuss, Absolution, Outkast's Speakerboxx/The Love Below (Stankonia is worthy too), Lifted or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground by Bright Eyes... even HTDAAB maybe...

but for now I'm giving it to ATYCLB. doesn't mean something - from U2 or otherwise - can't top it before the decade's over though

In the circles I normally mix, only Pure Reason Revolution count as obscure.

I'd just throw my top three into the mix, but my number four is just as loved as Blueberry Boat, so here goes...

4) The Streets' A Grand Don't Come For Free

And for the record, Sea Change has a few good/great songs but is not only tied for being the most boring record ever released by Beck (The Information is just as unlistenably bland)...it's straight-up one of the most boring records I've ever listened to.

And I like Steve Reich, too.

Anyway, it's already been a hell of a decade. When you scrape away all the mis-hyped stuff which actually sucks once you listen to it with a discerning ear (contemporary Beck, The Flaming Lips, Bob Dylan, Red Hot Ass Clowns, MMJ, Coldplay, and all that shit), there are just legions and legions of albums which've been amazing. I chalk most of my listening habits up to the internet and the ways in which it has revolutionized many of our listening habits. Ten years ago, it would have been all but impossible for me ever to have heard of new albums from Deerhoof, Carla Bozulich, Architecture in Helsinki, or especially Xiu Xiu or someone like William Basinski (whose Disintegration Loops may, for my money, be the most concise aural summary of America in this decade). Today, though, thanks to blogs and various online music criticism hubs, it's conceivable to keep up on what's going on in various corners of the musical landscape.

I have loved this decade like few others. There are dozens of albums which could easily take up those number three and four slots on my list, man. Sleater-Kinney has released two masterpieces, Dizzee Rascal's debut was nearly untouchable, ...Trail of Dead's major label debut was PHENOMENAL, and The New Pornographers have made some of the best pop music of the last thirty years. There're just so many great albums even in this, the era of the non-album. I've been wonderfully happy as a music listener. I've always hated a lot more music than I've loved, but I feel like I'm finally getting to the point where I can listen to enough literally to hear only music that I will probably adore.
