I think Automatic for the People is a much better and much more consistent album. Overall, I'd say maybe even Out of Time is better. I think of Monster as R.E.M.'s equivalent of Pop, and while I love Pop, it's not Achtung Baby or the Unforgettable Fire.

I'm just trying to guess what Lance might be thinking is the best album of the 90s. I threw that one out there because I know he likes R.E.M., and the albums I would've guessed would've been his picks had been mentioned already.

Good stuff. I'm surprised you didn't place Clouds Taste Metallic over Soft Bulletin, however.
Clouds is my favorite F'lips album, but people generally think The Soft Bulletin is the best for some reason. I don't understand why.

For me it goes mainly because of "World in my eyes" and "Policy of truth".

'siamese dream' by smashing pumpkins
'a storm in heaven' by verve (a great companion for 'loveless' and 'nowhere'!).
'mezcal head' by swervedriver (a great companion for 'siamese dream')
'spilt milk' by jellyfish
and lastly:
'Wake Up! Boo!' by the boo radleys

swish.

i dont think you can compare monster with pop in any way. u2 to tried to play the music that was hip at the time on pop. r.e.m. basically continued their own style on monster, just using distortion heavily, and making michael stipe invent a few new voices, like the falsetto.

monster got pwned by new adventures and up, btw.

I'll have to disagree with that. I love Monster! All the way to the end! The other 2 are awesome but have a few patchy moments I think, esp. Up.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi >>>>>> Monster

But Monster > Up.

Up has its highlights, but not enough of them.
