well other than u2 of course which bands do you think have reinvented themselves by making themself a better band, or a band you just cant listen to anymore?
U2- reinvented themselves with a rock brat attitude approach and experimented more with electronic sounds
Madonna- she's the female answer to david bowie in being a rock chameleon, she doesnt revolutionise music as such, rather keeps it fresh by playing more hip-hop beaty songs rather than just cheesey catchy 3 minute radio songs. a success
Underworld- one of the truly reinvented bands, though they only kept 2 original members from that odd mix of electro-jazz disco-funk 80s band, they have become the most important bands in getting trance/ deep house music out into the mainstream
Depeche Mode- people have a generalistion they are a cheesey 80s synth pop band, but they reinvented themselves in the 90s when they chose to incorporate grunge music with their prodominant synth atmosphere
Manic Street Preachers- hmm they started out as a retro punk band and chose to delve into the pop market with more catchier, less political and 'less mean' music of 'Everything Must Go' and 'This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours', it worked to some extent, still it doesnt change the fact that they are a total bunch of tossers
R.E.M- had became LOUDER in Monster, especially after the brilliant Automatic for the people, and tried to experiment with sounds on 'Up', unsuccessful, and many say they have peaked
Ministry- we're a great synth pop band from the very catchy With Sympathy, and the great Everyday Is Halloween and Twitch, before they undid all their good work and lost a lot of old fans who not only not listen to them, but actually hate them when they became an industrial band from 'The Land Of Rape and Honey'
Pearl Jam- from what people see as a prodominantly grunge band to become an alternative rock band willing to test out sounds from many music cultures around the world
PJ Harvey- from a young woman full of angst to writing catchy rock songs which dont get played on radio for some unknown reason
Radiohead- the mainstream hate the idea they decided to 'call it stumps' after two excellent rock-pop albums in the Bends and OK Computer, with experimental Commodore 64 computer-game sounds, though there is still something to come for the radiohead story one thinks
