Avril Lavigne...come on sound off...

How does everyone feel about Avril Lavigne? Am I the only one that looks her as simply the lastest attempt by flailing record labels to hook some demographic? Her whole image is one of "self reliance" and "say what I mean" but in essence she is still a marketing tool. I don't think anyone can achieve that kind of artistic freedom by 17 on a first album. The comercialism is so thinly veiled it is almost funny. Also, what does a 17 year old really know about anything? I knew s**t at 17.

It's funny.. one month, everyone is talking about her, she's the new focus, and everyone loves her. 2 weeks later, she's old news, no one likes her, claims she's just a slightly-more-talented Britney.

(and yes, I don't like her -- I agree with Daisy)

Big Grin I like her Canadian pride

My favorite headline of the past week - the story that followed was about Avril and some others......

"The anti-Britneys"

Well she writes her own music and plays her own instument so she gets my thumbs up. You might not think what she writes about is your cup of tea but is every 14-17 yr old really care about what the boss or U2 or any other band is singing about. And she really isnt a marketing tool. She has had her album made before the record comp. got a hold of it.

Appearance or image aside, I can't stand her music...at times, it seems like she's just rhyming whatever word comes into her head at the time. Not my cup of tea.

I know 17yr olds who have better things to say than "I like you the way you are"

Heck, younger even.

At least she can play an instrument though, I guess. The writing is very pedestrain, very pop, despite her endeavors to defy pop.

I don't think she's that bad. At least she can play an instrument and actually writes her own songs. As for the actual content of the songs, maybe it will get better as she matures.

Wow! She can play her own instrument? That's really hard to do, especially that tough rhythm guitar part. Sheesh, let's not fish for compliments, okay? See can look good on camera. That's why she's in the spotlight. That's about it. I know lots of girls and boys who can do exactly what she's pawning off.

She's cute. Really cute and sexy. For a 17 year old I'm surprised I find her remotely attractive. I usually go for the older chicks, but she's not bad at all. Is it wrong for me to think this? LOL.

Her outfit from her "complicated" video is in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. WHY.

She cannot sing. Singing really should be a requirement of being a singer I think. I have no idea why this is constantly overlooked. I cannot locate an appendix on someone's stomach, therefore will never be a surgeon. I am not 6'4, leggy and beautiful, therefore will never be a model. Anything beyond basic maths is beyond me, therefore I will never be an accountant.

Why is it, that not being able to sing a note, means little when becoming a singer? If you cannot sing and are producing and releasing recorded material, you are clearly only there for one reason, and that is your look so the record company can make some money. If she is happy getting to where she is by such false pretenses, fine. She does not have talent.

She is so o-ver-ra-ted, but my biggest complaint is not against her, but against the record company.

Between her, Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton, it seems that the music industry has noticed the popularity of Britney, etc., waning and have reacted accordingly, producing and releasing artists who can play an instrument and can, more-or-less, write their own tunes.

The decision, though, is JUST as calculated - and the actual music is just as forgettable and shallow.

PS - Anyone who writes a song called "Skater Boy" should be ignored utterly. Anyone who then spells that title "Sk8er Boi" should be forced into exile.
