Welcome to the first round of the Artist League, just a quick recap on the rules before I give you today's fixtures.
To give a result for a match you simple write down the score you want to give the match to the right of the fixture (e.g. U2 vs The Smiths 2-2).
You can select any result from 0-0 to 3-3 (if you do not know the bands please select 0-0)
When giving your results a win by 1 means you like an artist more, a win by 2 you like an artist a lot more and a win by 3 means there is no comparison between the two
It would be easier for me in counting the results if you give a result for each match, if you don't like the bands just go with a 0-0 and much on to the next match up.
There is no requirement of prior participation in the competition so if you feel like joining in now for the first time go right ahead and take part, I encourage it :)
As usual this match up will last for 48 hours that means that it will end at 3pm on Tuesday, so make sure you have your results in by then.

Streets of Philadelphia is an odd choice for introducing people to Springsteen. Not that it isn't a good song, but it's not really illustrative of his normal sound.

While The Who have a much stronger discography, I find Porcupine Tree’s best way better than The Who’s.

The Rolling Stones v David Bowie 1-3
I only like a handful of Stones songs so I’ll give them a point. Bowie is just amazing. Outside is utterly brilliant.

The Smiths v Arcade Fire 3-1
While I like Arcade Fire, they can’t compare to a band that gave us Meat Is Murder and The Queen Is Dead.

Coldplay v Led Zeppelin 3-1
I actually find that AROBTTH and Viva la Vida to be better than Zeppelin record.

The Verve v Radiohead 3-0
I really like The Verve and I think Radiohead is one of the worst bands I have ever heard.

I’ve only liked one Springsteen record and nothing by The Clash.

I just can’t see the appeal of Wilco.

1-0 was my way of saying that it was a really tight game, but that the Stones are just a better listen for me. I might not own a ton of Bowie, but I've heard him all my life, and simply prefer the Stones.....I just saw this match as a tight game, with a very late goal from the Stones securing the win.

Well that's why you have 2 days to do it :wink: and if you want you can do what Screwtape did and summit the divisions one at a time

I'd say it depends on how you rank the other band if you like them a lot then you might as well give them the win but if you don't like them too much then it's probably best to give it as a draw

The criticisms on this and the other thread are amusing.

I voted 3-3 for Coldplay-Led Zeppelin, reflecting the fact that they're both up high on my list of favorite bands. I suppose I could have voted 3-2, or even 2-2 -- both bands have their flaws, in my view, compared to my absolute favorites.

This is an interesting new way of voting and I suppose I'll be tweaking things as I go along. If I were voting on a scale of 0-3, for example, I'd definitely give Wilco a 3. But since they were going up against the Beatles, who is right up there with U2 for myabsolute favorite, do I need to knock Wilco down a peg or two? I ended up scoring it 3-2 for the Beatles, but I'm not sure if I calibrated it right. I just wouldn't feel right giving Wilco a 1 or a 0 in any event.

That was the reason for a limit of 3 in the scoring system; I felt that if the limit was 5 people would just use set scores for each band and it wouldn't change at all but with a limit of 3 you have to think about what scores you are giving a lot more
