I think one was the album version that you could hear on album oriented rock stations (the stations that didn't mind playing a song that lasted a bazillion minutes), and the other version was the single version, for stations that moved through songs quickly, so they could play more commercials.

I thought the song was "Knights in White Satin" until about a year and a half ago when someone posted about it here.
