Any Fans of Jane's Addiction out there?

I always liked a couple of their better-known songs, but last summer I picked up Nothin's Shocking for $2 at a Garage Sale (a Canadian Twoonie). It was the best value I ever got for my buck on a C.D. Were those guys ever intense! Agressive punk attitude with Zep style solos over meaningful lyrics.... powerful stuff. They were a true alternative rock band, and well before it became mainstream.

I know that Parry Farell was also the lead singer for Porno for Pyros (I've only heard two songs from them). Is anything in their catalogue worth buying? Is there a PFP compilation?

The best Porno for Pyro album is the first one, the famous one with the song "Pets" - Definitely worth picking up. The other P4P albums are not as solid.

But all Jane's albums are fantastic

Janes addiction is one of my favorite bands. If you have picked up ' nothing's shocking" make sure to pick up " Ritual de habitual". This album is amazing, with songs like " three days" " then she did" and classic girl. It will send you into a sunset strip, venice beach heroin induced trip. I can almost smell the china white now. I agree that the first porno's album is probably the better. If you like Perry's voice, he put out a solo record called " a song yet to be sung". With appearances by some of Janes and porno's lineup, also check out dave navarro's solo release, he does an amzing cover of The Velvet Undergrounds " venus in furs". Ceck it out, there is me and Stephen( janes addiction drummer). He bought one of my crappiest paintings Ive ever done.

i edit copied this reply of mine from a jane's thread posted last august...(although what i meant by that barbie and ken statement, i have no idea...)

i first stumbled across jane's addiction back in 1987, when i saw them open for love and rockets at UC irvine. they had only been together about a year. they completely stole the show. their sound was like nothing i had ever heard, and perry farrell simply blew my mind as a front man. (during this particular show, he tore off his skirt about halfway through the set, and played the rest of the show naked from the waist down.)

i was hooked.

after the show, i went out and got their first first album, the XXX album. it's a live album, recorded at the roxy in 1987. i saw them again at the john anson ford theatre in april of 1989. by this time, nothing's shocking had already been released. it was an outdoor show, and the stage was full of candles and perry's dreads were blue, and they played most of the show acoustic, which again, blew my mind. my car got towed at that show and i didn't give a shit.

then they released ritual, and everything changed. (my dear HOS will have to back me up on this one, he and i have been here before...) i heard been caught stealing, and saw the video, and it was like watching ken put barbie on the streets. that pure, raw quality that they had was gone. there were a few great songs on that album, but it even showed in their live show. it was over.

i saw them for the third, and final time, in 1991.

I love Jane's Addiction!

There are only 2 PFP albums and I think they're both good. You can find them used pretty cheaply so I'd suggest picking both of them up at some point.

I"m guessing you mean the "Been Caught Stealing" vid. If so, that's not Perry, just some random guy they found to be in the video.

one of my favourites. in my opinion, they never get the respect they fully deserve; jane's really paved the way for alt-rock in the late 80s/early 90s. nothing's shocking and ritual de lo habitual are both fantastic albums. three days is one of the most amazing epic songs ever.

For a band that only put out three studio albums, their output is a lot more impressive than Nirvana's (who I like). They were certainly more ambitious.

I'm gonna have to put in another vote for J.A.'s first album, which has always been my favorite. My Time is one of the most beautiful things they've done, and in my opinion a better ballad than Jane Says. Trip Away and Whores kick total ass, and the live medley of (The Velvet Underground's) Rock and Roll & Sympathy for the Devil is just...well it puts most of U2's covers to shame.

While I like Ritual a lot, I like it the least of the three albums. Although songs like Three Days and Then She Did are very, very amazing.

Ahh, the 90's....

PS, Stephen Perkins is my favorite drummer of all time. He is relentless. I saw P4P at Roseland Ballroom in NYC and he had one of the more unique drum kits I've ever seen. He rules.
