remember that Hotmail is part of your personal Microsoft Passport account and your Hotmail address is part of the information people can get from your Passport account. An excerpt from a wsj.com story

"The Federal Trade Commission said Thursday it reached an agreement with Microsoft Corp. involving the privacy and security of personal information collected from consumers using its Passport Internet service.

The settlement, announced at a morning press conference, was aimed at resolving a complaint filed by privacy groups in July 2001 about the design and use of Passport, which promises consumers a single, convenient method for identifying themselves across different Web sites.

FTC Chairman Timothy Muris said the agency determined that Microsoft made deceptive claims and misrepresented the security surrounding the design and use of Passport. Mr. Muris said Microsoft's promises about Passport's security and safety were deceptive, and Microsoft collected more information from consumers than it reported......

The FTC said Thursday it found no actual security breaches but said there was a potential for security breaches. The FTC also found that Microsoft did collect and hold, for a limited time, information on the Web pages that Passport users visited. Microsoft had said as part of its privacy policy that such information wouldn't be collected."

i love how microsoft, with all the billions of dollars they have and make each year, they feel it's not enough. they have to sell clients' information to people and not directly inform them of this.
