In a harrowing, real life drama that rivals any of her movies, UN Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, 31, admits to News of the World that authorities in a foreign country she won’t name uncovered an elaborate plan to abduct the starlet.

“It was in a small village. I won't say where, or with whom, but some gangsters planned to kidnap me and extort a massive ransom, “ Jolie confesses to the British paper. “I was warned at the last minute, and managed to escape, luckily."

Jolie’s boyfriend, Brad Pitt, 43, has understandably expressed concern for the safety of their family, including children Maddox, 5, two-year old Zahara, and nine-month-old Shiloh.

"I don't want to act like the Mother Teresa of Hollywood," Jolie tells News of the World. "But I want to help where there is poverty and destruction. I love Brad very much and on our trips we pull together as a team. Things only get difficult when it affects our children.”

That won’t stop the mother-on-a-mission from traveling to underprivileged, and often dangerous countries in an effort to fight injustice. Jolie became an ambassador for the UN in August 2001, and has since been to more than 20 countries around the world on their behalf.

Jolie and Pitt are currently in the process of expanding their family, and will adopt a toddler from Vietnam. Jolie credits motherhood with making her a better person. “It made me feel like a complete woman,” she says. “At times in my life I was lost, without a purpose, now I'm more grounded."

I love Angelina, she's so inspirational and let's not forget gorgeous as heck!

Yikes! Glad nothing terrible happened.

Sheesh, celeb drama is insane these days!

Good on her for all the work she does and not being afraid to travel to such places, but I hope she's careful for the sake of her kids...

Just want to throw this out there, as I do applaud what she is doing, but....

What is wrong with adopting a child from the poor poverty areas of the U.S? I know Queen Latifah is planning on doing this, and she made the comments about trying to help out our own country's children instead of someone's overseas.

I think this is a pretty delicate subject, as neither person is doing something wrong. Although I wonder about Madonna's experience just being for show.

I think it's a valid criticism. However, adopting domestically can be very difficult. There are more issues with privacy. For a superstar like Madonna, there most likely would have been so many issues during and after the adoption. Parents change their minds all the time, even when "normal" folk adopt their babies. I know a family who has adopted 4 kids from other countries and one kid domestically. The one adopted from the US has brought on FAR more problems (the birth mother trying to track them down, trying to change her mind and fight for visitation rights after the fact) than all the foreign babies combined. Also, Madonna did not adopt for "show", given that only three Malawian babies were allowed to be adopted non-domestically that year. Hundreds of thousands of orphans and Madonna was one of THREE who were approved. They must have decided she was an appropriate candidate, otherwise she would have been required to live there for a certain amount of time. The decision was not hers, it was theirs. If she wanted to adopt for "show", she would have found a country that processes adoptions more quickly and more readily than Malawi.

Angelina is a UN ambassador. It makes perfect sense for her to be spending so much time in under developed countries and adopting her babies from these places. She would have the same issues as Madonna if she tried to adopt domestically.

I think it's just a personal choice that should be made between the parents and adoption agencies. Either way, an orphaned child will get a home. It shouldn't matter where the kid is from.

That sounds like a movie script, the plot to kidnap Angelina. Scary stuff especially being in some of the countries she visits. She's a very brave & courageous woman to do so.

Angelina Jolie landed in Vietnam Wednesday night to complete the process of adopting a 3-year-old boy.

The actress, 31, was quickly escorted into a car with dark windows and driven from the airport, according to a photographer employed by the Associated Press.

After she receives the 3-year-old child – and participates in an adoption ceremony with officials in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday morning – Jolie is expected to meet with U.S. consular officials who will then need to review the adoption before granting the child a passport.

The child has been living at the Tam Binh orphanage outside Ho Chi Minh City ever since he was abandoned at a hospital as a baby, according to adoption officials. Shortly after he arrived at the orphanage, staff attempted to locate the boy's birth parents with no success. The boy is healthy, friendly and shy, they said. He also gets along well with other children and enjoys playing soccer, the AP reports.

Vietnamese law makes it difficult for unmarried couples to adopt so Jolie is applying solo – but she and her partner, Brad Pitt, had planned for months to welcome a Vietnamese sibling for Maddox, 5, Zahara, 2, and 10-month-old Shiloh.

It was a "process that began shortly after Shiloh was born [in May]," a source told PEOPLE in a recent cover story.

I like that they didn't adopt a newborn. Kids who are no longer babies have a really hard time being placed as they get older.

I assume People made a donation for these photos just as they did for the Shiloh photos
