Oh, you mean how it helped get rid of Allende and bring Pinochet to power? Just part and parcel of decades of US foreign policy really, ousting unfriendly democratically elected governments in favour of friendly dictators.

And the US wonders why it's so unpopular!

Yeah Allende, what bothers me so much about it is that Allende wasn't even militaristic! He was trying to avoid conflict But what really bothered me is what the Chileans that the US backed, did to the rest of Allende's supporters.

To quote my book on the subject:

Quote:
The Chilean coup turned out to be the bloodiest such takeover in the history of Latin America. Thousands of supporters of Popular Unity, from folksingers to peasant organizers to university professors, were herded into the Santiago soccer stadium, many never to be heard from again, their bodies shuttled to secret mass graves.

US foreign policy throughout the 1970s was a complete fucking trainwreck, really. Not just in Latin America. Let's not forget that when Vietnam invaded Cambodia and ousted Pol Pot's madly genocidal regime, the US condemned Vietnam for violating Cambodia's sovereignty and continued to recognise Khmer Rouge diplomats as Cambodia's international representatives.

My favourite quote was from one US diplomat who remarked that the Vietnamese invasion was "probably good for the Cambodian people". Smart man ...
