Is there a song that you can personally categorize as "beautiful"?

For me, that would have to be Sigur Ros' "Svefn-G-Englar." Such an ambient feel to it with haunting voices.

Of course, this is a totally subjective topic. What song would you say?

Melon

 I agree with you both and I will add

Coldplay- Trouble(acoustic)
Fleetwood Mac- Silver Springs
Bruce- Secret Garden
Beatles- Yesterday
Cranberries- Dreams

Song To the Siren - This Mortal Coil
Fade Into You - Mazzy Starr
The Scientist - Coldplay
Happy Christmas - John Lennon
Fur Elise - Bach
Sweet Jane - Concrete Blonde's version

My Sweet Lord - George Harrison (The sheer joy in his voice in this song just makes me love everything!)

Within You Without You - The Beatles (Melody, music, words... practically perfect in every way)

Beautiful Day - U2 (No question in my mind, this is one of the greatest songs ever written, imo)

April Come She Will - Simon and Garfunkel

And yeah... like a hundred more... :)

Great topic!

*Imagine--John Lennon
*Scarborough Fair--gotta run with the pack with Simon and Garfunkel
*Razor Love--Neil Young
*Stay--U2

Again, there are tons more but I'm drawing a blank.

there are quite a lot i can think of...

greg graffin--opinion
coldplay--the scientist
u2--always
live--run to the water

a million more...

I got a few

Beatles- Let It Be, Yesterday, Blackbird
U2- Running to Stand Still, One Tree Hill, MLK, All I want Is You (tons others)
David Gray- This Years Love (I think that's what its called)
Coldplay- The Scientist, Trouble, We Never Change, Warning Sign

All i can think of at the moment.

I'm having trouble separating beautiful from sad..it usually sad songs

I don't want to put a sad song on this list, I'm looking for beauty without sadness. I listened to Sinead sing "To Mother You" yesterday. It is beautiful, but also sad.
I am about to go to town with my birthday money...you guys here make Sigur Ros sound good. I deserve a new CD..hmmmm I'd like the Best of...big decision.
I'l come back when I find a beautiful and unsad song.

i second running to stand still

and add silverchair--luv your life
bruce springsteen--the river

Mmmmm, MLK is gorgeous. In fact, I am in agreeance (;)) with many of the songs already mentioned. A couple more:

More Like The Moon - Wilco
Into the Sunset - Neil Finn

oh goodness...

jeff buckley-you and i, hallelujah, lover you should've come over, satisfied mind
u2-love is blindness, north and south of the river, all i want is you, mlk, stay, please, the list goes on...
pete yorn-crystal village, lose you, all at once, so much work
oasis-don't turn back in anger
rem-nightswimming, find the river, everybody hurts, sweetness follows
radiohead-nice dream
i can't even think straight...song overload...but whenever i hear these songs i just stop what i'm doing and get lost in the music...

i think a lot of songs are beautiful :sexywink:...but right now my #1 choice is "you and i"...

"Songbird," Fleetwood Mac
"Vincent (Starry Starry Night)," Don McLean
"Putting the Damage On," "Josephine," "Gold Dust," Tori Amos
"Nightswimming," "You Are the Everything" R.E.M. (Stories is on to something)
"All I Want Is You," "Stay" U2
"Fumbling Towards Ecstasy," Sarah McLachlan
"Damn Sam I Love a Woman That Rains," Ryan Adams
"Tonight and the Rest of My Life," Nina Gordon

There are ever so many. Here are a few off the top of my head:

Vangelis - "Chariots of Fire Theme"
Sigur Ros - "() #1"
Clinic - "Distortions"

INXS "Never Tear Us Apart"
Madonna "X-Static Process"
The Beatles "Blackbird"
Guns 'n Roses "Patience"
Poison "Every Rose Has Its Thorn"
The Eagles "Best of My Love"
Don Henley "Heart of the Matter"

Totally second "Fade Into You" and "Songbird."

I have an official Pearl Jam bootleg from Columbus (I think) and there's a kickin' version of Black on there. I'm not too huge a fan of guitar solos that go on and on, but the jam at the end is amazing.

Pearl Jam - Crazy Mary sounds beautiful, even though I think the lyrics are of fairly dark material.
Ash have some songs that can be classified as 'sweet' (the free all angels stuff, especially) although i'm not sure about 'beautiful'.

For ?Beautiful? songs - currently I would pick 3 songs from Daniel Lanois new album Shine:

1.) The first track I Love You is a duet with Emmylou Harris (more of a backing vocals part). An excellent song with the typical and famous Lanois ?sound? (rich and lush atmosphere). Absolutely gorgeous.

2.) The Canadian release of Shine has a bonus track called Red. It is a beautiful song and I would place it among the very best songs on Shine. It is a quiet song with acoustic guitar and piano and it has a sunny summer day kind of feel. Red creates an atmosphere and a picture of two lovers laying on the grass under a willow tree near a river. My Canadian version does not list Red on the back of the CD cover but Red is listed on the CD itself as track 14. You can listen to it here:

3.) The second track is Falling At Your Feet is a duet with Bono. It has always struck me as having a Simon & Garfunkel type of feel. The version on Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack is 4:54 whereas this version is 3:41. At present I prefer MDH version.

Beautiful Day--Three Colours Red
Clocks--Coldplay (or pretty much all of AROBTTH)
Black--Pearl Jam
Love Is Blindness, the opening of Streets--U2
How to Disappear Completely--Radiohead
Joga--Bjork
Wonderland--Angie Aparo
If You Tolerate This, You're Children Will Be Next--Manic Street Preachers
Burger Queen--Placebo
Fast Car--Tracy Chapman

R.E.M. - at my most beautiful
The Beach Boys - all I wanna do, our sweet love, god only knows
U2 - promenade

YES. TRACY CHAPMAN! DEFINITELY! :)

I would say
Amazing it seems - Granada
Bloodless - Tom Mcrae
La Cienega just Smiled - Ryan Adams
Here, There and Everywhere - The Beatles
Feelings i thought you shared - Embrace
Goodbye - Tracy Chapman

I love that song.

Agree with the mention of "Stay" by U2, would also throw "Heartland" and "40" in there as well.

Other songs:

"In Your Eyes"-Peter Gabriel
"Nights In White Satin"-Moody Blues (DEFINITELY consider this song beautiful)
"Unchained Melody"-Righteous Brothers
"A Whiter Shade Of Pale"-Procol Harum (the music in the song is lovely)

Angela

it's funny cause i always thought of it as knights in white satin without ever having consciously heard the song. how silly.

Lamb ? Gorecki
Lou Reed ? Perfect Day
Peter Gabriel ? Blood of Eden
REM ? I?ve Been High, Find the River
Sigur Ros ? Staralfur
