I'm am not sure if there are many bands out there today who can structure a song so brilliantly.

I should be getting my T shirt soon too!!

I've been waiting (patience can be excruciating!) until tomorrow to listen to it. Since I don't have to work until later in the day, I'm going to go out and buy it first thing in the morning.

I'll pick it up on my lunch break.

I already listened to it once online and I need the real thing today.

So what does everyone think of the 10-min noise at the end of the otherwise gorgeous Less than You Think? The Housemate and I vowed to get through it but then ended up >> until the end. Despite the fact that they really push the threshold of irritation on a few songs, I love this record.

Yes, but this one's way over the top...10 minutes of cover-your-ears torturous piercing noise which apparently Tweedy has said is supposed to mimic is infamous migraines. Even though I get what it is, and I really do appreciate (and love!) their experimental noises, I will never ever ever be able to listen to this again. I'll hit the skip button as soon as the actual song ends and the noise begins. Funny thing is, the lyrics on this song are among the most beautiful and sensitive he's ever written and then the song goes straight to hell!

Ok - I've never heard a single Wilco song or album. Can anyone recommend anything about Wilco for me to check out - and to be totally trite - compare them to other bands that might sound like Wilco?

Girl, you need a mix. You want a mix? You ask, you receive.

But back to the question, Uncle Tupelo was the band that put the alt in country. They were Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy et al. The band split, Farrar went on to do his thing with Son Volt and Tweedy with Wilco. That's the history.

But Wilco isn't alt.country anymore--they left that behind although you can still hear a little bit of it here and there. Jeff Tweedy is a poet, a soulful songwriter, a literary man, with a sweet but raw and raspy voice. He writes intelligent heartbreaking ballads (think Lucinda Williams ) and can also rock out like nobody's business (think Neil Young & Crazy Horse). Throw in The Band for that live-in-the-studio sound and some forays into West Coast pop and a li'l Radioheadesque experimental weirdness. The music is very American in the best possible sense of the word.

That's sort've my take on them, off the top of my head.

I got the album yesterday and it's so damn good. The 10 minute noise fest is a bit on the excessive side but I just skip it and thankfully there is another song after it.

Carrie--wanna Wilco mix?

A Ghost Is Born...oh, man, I feel like I did the first time I heard Amnesiac...which is to say a bit overwhelmed, a bit frightened, a bit confused...

And I'm with Tweedy on the migraines.
