I thought about Lou Reed, but I think I have a hard time getting into him outside of Transformer

Have you tried listening to New York?

I strongly second Tori Amos and Paul Simon. And I love 'Time' by Tom Waits...I just prefer to hear Tori sing it.

The best version I've heard of "Time" was actually by a local folk singer named Jan Smith. It was the entire reason I started listening to him. But in general, I prefer Tom singing his own songs, especially "Jersey Girl" (Sorry Bruce), "Ol' 55" (Sorry to the Eagles and Sarah McLachlan, and "Downtown Train" (I'm not actually sorry to Rod Stewart at all).
