The city of blinding lights and amazing coffee - M
Hi, I like most of you out there am a lover of music, and love hearing new music, usually passed on my friends or people saying 'omg you must hear this song!!'

I thought it would be great if people could post songs in here that they absolutely love and think everyone in the world should hear it. It could be a U2 song (im sure everyone on here already has heard them though!), another band, any genre, any time, write up the lyrics or tell me why you love this song and recommend it?

There are so many bands out there i've never heard of that people love and vice versa, and I couldn't find a thread where people could post their favourite song recommendations.

So for my first song I recommend is 'The Boy With a Thorn in His Side' by The Smiths. I *love* the melody and Moz's lyrics and voice. Its such a fantastic song!

Next?!

I would recommend anyone to check out Will Oldham/Palace Music/Palace Brothers/Bonny Prince Billie (the guy likes to change his name now and again)
usually the song "Give me children" because of it's heartbreaking honest qualities is my fav

since it can be a bit difficult finding his work I give thee a live version of the song "Same love" which shows a bit of the man's genius

Give me children - Will Oldham/Palace Music/Palace
Kashmir - led Zeppelin

Start of a great list! :)

Now maybe when you recommend a song, tell us why? What is it about the song that you love? What resonates with you? Why does that band rock?

Pete Murray - Oppurtunity
I love the lyrics in this song, and how laid back and chilled the song is. Great song to sing in the car! hehehe

World Spins-Julee Cruise
Falling-Julee Cruise
Two songs featured in the great TV series Twin Peaks. JC could always express the melancholy of Laura Palmer. Two very moving tracks.

Under The Ivy-Kate Bush
This Woman's Work-Kate Bush
Moments Of Pleasure-Kate Bush
Three of Kate's best and probably three of the most beautiful songs ever written. If love could be expressed in a sound taht sound would be Kate Bush's voice.

Don't You Ever Learn?-Todd Rundgren
The greatest songwriter of all-time. Every romantic should have this song on thier IPOD. Todd is God.

Singring and The Glass Guitar-Utopia
If only U2 would write eighteen plus minute songs. I remember listening to the RA album as a little kid on long road trips.

Children's Crusade-Sting
A song that no one remembers. A touching song considering the world today. The title alone speaks volumes.

A long list from me, because I'm bored. Excluding Dream Theater's ACOS, because I mentioned it earlier:

Anathema - Deep
Anathema - Don't Look Too Far
Blackfield - Cloudy Now
The Chills - Heavenly Pop Hit
The Chills - Male Monster From The Id
The Chills - Pink Frost
The Chills - Tangled Up In Chain

Circus Maximus - Sin
Crowded House - Anyone Can Tell
Crowded House - Distant Sun
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
Crowded House - Fingers Of Love
Crowded House - Kare Kare
Crowded House - Recurring Dream
Crowded House - World Where You Live
Dream Theater - Learning To Live
Dream Theater - Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Dream Theater - Lines In The Sand
Dream Theater - Metropolis Part I: The Miracle And The Sleeper
Dream Theater - Only A Matter Of Time
Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
Dream Theater - Space-Dye Vest
Dream Theater - Trial Of Tears
Dream Theater - Under A Glass Moon
Joy Division - Atrocity Exhibition
Joy Division - Disorder
Joy Division - New Dawn Fades
Joy Division- She's Lost Control
Joy Division - Twenty Four Hours
Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift
Liquid Tension Experiment - State Of Grace
Liquid Tension Experiment - Universal Mind
Marillion - This Is The 21st Century

Orphaned Land - The Storm Still Rages Inside
Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine
Pink Floyd - Sorrow
Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
Porcupine Tree - Buying New Soul
Porcupine Tree - Lazarus
Porcupine Tree - Piano Lessons
Porcupine Tree - The Sound Of Muzak
Pure Reason Revolution - Goshens Remains
Pure Reason Revolution - The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows
The Shadows - Apache
The Shadows - Kon-Tiki
The Shadows - Shadoogie
The Shadows - The Savage
The Shadows - Wonderful Land
Spiral Architect - Purpose
Split Enz - Hermit McDermitt
Split Enz - History Never Repeats
Split Enz - Six Months In A Leaky Boat
Straitjacket Fits - She Speeds
The Verve - A New Decade
Wolverine - A House Of Plague
Wolverine - Hiding

And a couple of songs U2 fans seem to rarely know:

U2 - Treasure (Whatever Happened To Pete The Chop?)
U2 - Wild Irish Rose

Garnet Rogers - Sleeping Buffalo My fav singer/songwriter of all time. This song is my favourite of his.

Agalloch - I Am the Wooden Doors
I really enjoy the sound this band has.

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
This was a concept album that was created when the singers daughter passed away. It's a one track album, and IMO, is really something else. It needs to be heard. It's like a eulogy in song.

Alien Ant Farm - Crickets
yeah, they're the band that did the Smooth Criminal cover, but they have done so much more. Judging them on Smooth Criminal is like judging U2 on Vertigo. Crickets is from their latest album, Up in the Attic, and it's absolutely beautiful.

Alien Ant Farm - Drifting Apart
Killer riff, from their 2003 album truANT.

Alien Ant Farm - Universe
kind of epic and apparently Radiohead inspired, though I wouldn't say that influence is obvious

Dredg - Same Ol' Road
I adore Dredg. They're like a rock band mixed with a cinema score. Almost prog, but not really.

Editors - Munich
Most listened to song on my iPod. So catchy and energetic!

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Little Wing
Jimi understood.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Spanish Castle Magic
If you like guitar, you need to hear this song. Axis: Bold as Love is by far Jimi's best album, imo

Porcupine Tree - Trains
I've got three PT albums, but this is the one song that I always come back to. It's six minutes long but it doesn't feel like a long song at all

Rage Against the Machine - Guerilla Radio
simply badass

Rage Against the Machine - Wake Up
best RATM ever?

Smashing Pumpkins - Set the Ray to Jerry
I got this from Anderson Cooper's iTunes playlist!! :hyper: prolly never would have discovered it otherwise

The Stills - Love and Death
"I'm just so bored of wasting my time/Love and death are always on my mind..." from Logic Will Break Your Heart. good indie rock-ish. like a shinier Interpol, maybe.

The Velvet Underground - Stephanie Says
it wasn't on any of their original albums but it's probably my favourite VU song

Wilco - I Am Trying to Break Your Heart
"I am an American aquarium drinker/I assasin down the avenue"

Wilco - Jesus Etc.
Makes me tear up almost everytime I hear it.

Wilco - Poor Places
just...buy Yankee Hotel Foxtrot if you don't already have it

Wilco - Wishful Thinking
another fantastic Wilco ballad from A Ghost is Born

sorry for the lengthy explanations, but I figured a brief description of the song and where one might find it could help. I could go on forever, really... :D

A couple of Canadian bands that some might not know of...

Cowboy Junkies - Miles From Our Home. Achingly beautiful lyrics, and Margo Timmins has a gorgeous voice. One of the most beautiful and sweet videos I've ever seen, too. A shy native Canadian young man has a crush on another young man - lots of really sweet stolen glances, and at the end, he learns that his affection is reciprocated.

Blue Rodeo - Five Days in May. Again, with the lyrics, and the melody is haunting. The guitar solo at the end cuts right through you.

Sloan - Underwhelmed. More rockin' than the other two, but again, clever lyrics.

Matthew Good (solo and with MG Band)- Hello Time Bomb - aggressive and kinda angry, and Strange Days - he's just an overall great artist, and these are two of my favourites by him.

best song bar none even

that's why I don't even tell people they should hear it, because if they haven't heard it already I'd lose what rests of my sanity

Woah, another Agalloch fan! Didn't expect to find one in these parts. I was going to put them on my list but I just couldn't choose. Well, here's a few now though.

Agalloch - Dead Winter Days
Agalloch - Falling Snow
Agalloch - In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion
Agalloch - Kneel To The Cross
Agalloch - She Painted Fire Across The Skyline

And I really need to check out Green Carnation. Keep meaning to, haven't gotten around to it yet ...
