Bono, Eve to Honor Mandela
Human rights concert scheduled for February
Bono, Eve, Ludacris, Nelly Furtado, Coldplay, Shaggy, Joe Strummer, Jimmy Cliff, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Femi Kuti, Queen and others will perform at Nelson Mandela's historic Mandela SOS concert on February 2nd. The concert will take place on the site of the maximum-security prison on Robben Island, South Africa, where Mandela was incarcerated for eighteen years.
The Eurythmics' Dave Stewart will serve as musical supervisor for the event, which was organized by Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Richard Branson and Naomi Campbell to raise international awareness about the AIDS epidemic that has ravaged Africa. Other performers include Deborah Cox, Angelique Kidjo, Bongo Maffin, Baaba Maal, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Vusi Mahlasela, Ms. Dynamite and Johnny Clegg.
"We can think of no better time, place or cause for us to return to the stage," says drummer Roger Taylor of Queen, who lost singer Freddie Mercury to AIDS in 1991.
The show will conclude with "48864," a group sing-a-long of a song written by Strummer with Bono and Stewart, based on Strummer's lyrics. The title is a reference to the number of the cell where Mandela spent nearly two decades.
Ticket information is not yet available, but entrance will be free, with attendees determined by a lottery system. The concert will be televised globally and also streamed live at www.mandelasos.com. Some of the performers will also take the stage at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, for the People's Concert, where another 30,000 fans can take in the music. Portions of the Robben Island show will also be broadcast at the Green Point show.
Proceeds from both events will go towards the Nelson Mandela Foundation, UNAIDS, the Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Robben Island Museum.
