Irish Rock Star Meets With City Leaders During Midwest Tour
Irish rock star Bono is in the Chicago area today.
After a visit to a south side church, the lead singer of U2 heads for Wheaton College. He's campaigning, along with actress Ashley Judd, to increase public awareness of the AIDS emergency in Africa and to push for third-world debt relief.
NBC5's Mary Ann Ahern reported from Wheaton Tuesday, and faculty and students were eagerly awaiting Bono's appearance Wednesday evening.
Bono is traveling with an African chorus, Ahern reported.
"But it's not a concert," Ahern said. "It's a way for Bono to raise awareness of the more than 6,000 HIV-positive Africans who die each day."
By reaching out to people during his current Midwest tour, Bono hopes to persuade those with power and money to react, Ahern said.
The Wheaton College event, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, is by ticket only.
After his Chicago-area visit, Bono heads to Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.
