Soundscan : U2 Push Eminem From The Top

What is it about U2 that keeps people buying Greatest Hits collections even if there?s only one new song ? and far from their most exciting at that ? to sweeten the pot? I don?t really have the answer, but shoppers were out in droves to pick up the Best Of 1990-2000 collection, making it #1 this week. Just to refresh your memory, 1990-2000 is the era of Achtung Baby, Zooropa and All That You Can?t Leave Behind. That?s to say, not the era of War, Boy, Unforgettable Fire or Joshua Tree. I?m not making a judgement here. I?m just reminding you.

The 8 Mile soundtrack continues to sell huge numbers in its second week. It drops to #2, but sales stick around similar numbers as last week ? that?s something to be proud of. It?s likely it?ll stick around the top of the chart for as long as the movie stays at #1.

Also brand new near the top is Justin Timberlake?s solo debut, Justified. We wonder if his new bad boy image will affect his sales for better or worse. Either way, he?s still sitting pretty at #3. In the fourth spot is the Francophone compilation, Mixmania, featuring tracks by Aucun Regret, Defense Urbaine and a duet with Gabrielle Destroismaisons and Jonathan Painchaud.

In the fifth and sixth spots are chart stalwarts Elvis?s 30 #1 Hits and Avril Lavinge?s Let Go. Is there a home in Canada that doesn?t own these records?

Taking a deep plunge is Nirvana?s self-titled hits package. Maybe it?s the sucky "new" single, maybe it?s the realization that, while the songs remain, the production sounds dated, but unless there?s a big push around Christmas, it seems interest in Nirvana has waned.

Also taking a pretty significant dip ? from #3 to #8 ? is Christina Aguilera?s Stripped. Sex may sell, but once the novelty wears off, it?s game over.

Completing the top 10 is Santana?s Shaman, Eminem?s Eminem Show and The Rolling Stones? 40 Licks.

As far as debuts in the top 25, the only others are Andrea Bocelli?s Sentimento and David Gray?s New Day At Midnight. Now you know have something to buy your folks for Christmas!
