U2 SCALE NEW HEIGHTS

U2 are to relocate their famous Dublin studio to the top of a planned 180-foot tower on the city's River Liffey.

The studio, to be built on the top two floors of the new tower, will be designed by a winning architect as part of a competition launched yesterday by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority.

According to Reuters, a member of U2 will sit on the jury that selects the winning design.

"We are proud to be a Dublin band. We did not want to break our strong association with the docklands and this development gives us the opportunity to secure the unique nature of accommodation we need in a truly remarkable and exciting way," U2 said in a statement.

Earlier this year, the band lost a battle to save their famous Hanover Quay studio, which is to be demolished in late 2005 as part of ongoing development of the riverside area.

The studio, wherein the band recorded 2000's Grammy-winning album, 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', has been compared in significance to The Cavern Club in Liverpool where The Beatles made their name.

As previously reported, over 8,000 fans signed an online petition in an effort to save the studio.

Peter Coyne, Chief Executive of the Docklands Authority, said he is delighted U2 will be be moving into the tower.

"It can only add to the significance of the landmark. Indeed it adds to the significance of the whole area," he said.
