U2 Sign Up for Recording Studio with a View

(Reuters) - Irish rock group U2, whose landmark Dublin recording studio is slated for demolition, is to relocate to the top of a planned 180-foot tower on the Irish capital's River Liffey.

On Tuesday, the Dublin Docklands Development Authority launched an international competition for architects to come up with a design for the tower, which will house U2's new recording studio on its top two floors.

A member of U2 will sit on the jury that selects the winning design.

"We are proud to be a Dublin band. We did not want to break our strong association with the docklands and this development gives us the opportunity to secure the unique nature of accommodation we need in a truly remarkable and exciting way," a spokesman for U2 said in a statement.

Earlier this year, the band lost a battle with planning authorities to prevent the compulsory purchase of the docklands studio where they recorded 2000's Grammy-winning album "All That You Can't Leave Behind."

The building, which had been compared in significance to The Cavern Club in Liverpool where The Beatles spent their early days, will be razed to make way for new public amenities amid extensive development of the riverside.

Over 8,000 fans had signed an online petition to preserve the studio, where the group also recorded "Passengers" and some of their "Pop" album.

Peter Coyne, Chief Executive of the Docklands Authority, said he was delighted U2 would move into the tower.

"It can only add to the significance of the landmark. Indeed it adds to the significance of the whole area," he said.

U2 will continue to use their Hanover Quay studio until the tower is completed, probably toward the end of 2005.
