Why is Cobain on that list?????
I think of him as a songwriter......guitarist no way.

Here's the picture from the Rolling Stone website as well.

Wow, that list sure is a joke. Who the **** cares what RS thinks? It's hard to rate guitarists because of their different styles, but putting Cobain, Jack White, Keith Richards, Frusciante, Hammett, etc. above the Edge is complete stupidity. Haha..needed a good laugh today. Why do people like to trash on anything U2?

Not a bad spot for the Edge, don't bother griping about that.

Jack White's inclusion in the top 20 is debatable.

Rolling Stone's standard of measure, whether it be technical skill, artistic merit, compositional ability, or random listing of names is perplexing. Comparing different generations of guitarists without respect to any context whatsoever is devaluing to all involved. It's silly.

But then again, I do believe the Olsen Twins were on the decisive panel.

Rock on!

Kurt Cobain  :eyebrow: ???? This is laughable. He was ok with Nirvana, but one of the greatest guitarist? No way. I completely disagree with Rolling Stone.

Umm.....where the hell is Slash! He should bloody well be in the top five.
And why the hell are Kurt Cobain and Jack White even on the list, let alone in the top 50. Its an absurd travesty. If I hear one more thing about the White Stripes I swear I will drown myself in a toilet bowl.
What a crack of hooey. Notable absentees
Johnny Marr
Porl Thompson
Will Sargeant
Robert Smith
Bernard Sumner

Completely agree

ROLLING STONES( the mag) has sucked for the past 5 years.

im actuall glad that the great SLASH is not on that list.

i can play 1001% better than that dude from white stripes.(he cant even sing)

oh did i tell you all , rolling stones (the mag) has sucked for the past 5 years.

jimmy page if not at 1 should be at 2.

this is another reason to hate and not buy rolling stones mag ever.

when you're talking greatest guitar players of all time, there's only one non-debatable spot on the list... hendrix is #1... come on... people have tried to say how other people should be #1... that's fine... you could think that other people are better... it's all an opinion thing... but hendrix changed guitar playing the way no one else ever has. so even if you're not a fan of his work, he HAS to be #1. if he had lived on to play on countless B.S. singles like Clapton has? well then you might be able to argue... but Jimi was a bright flash of light... changed the way guitar was done... and then he was gone. any list that doesn't have him as #1, just out of pure respect, should be used as toilet paper.

side note... anyone who needs a "of this band" next to their name does not belong anywhere near the top 10.

slash obviously should have at least cracked the top 100... how many guys on that list have created a riff as well known as welcome to the jungle? the guy is instantly recognizable 10 years since the last significant thing he's done. he should be on the list somewhere.

johnny marr should deffinetly be on there

as for the "how is the guy from the white stripes on there? he can't even sing!" thing... um... i don't agree either that he should be as high as he is, but not thinking he can sing has didly squat to do with his guitar playing.

anyone who's seen pearl jam perform live knows that mike mccready not being on that list is a joke.

Although we love U2 and the Edge, he is probably rated too high on the list. He is a hell of a guitarist but there are many on this list--and not on this list--that are better (Fruciante, Van Halen, Vai, Satriani, etc...) Whatever. I'm glad he received his recognition...

Some of the most illogical and inexplicable placements on this list are Jack White, Kirk Hammet, Van Halen and Cobain. White is good but not anywhere near the top 20; Cobain was never reknown for his guitar work; Hammet should be on the list, but not that high; Eddie Van Halen at #70 is like leaving Babe Ruth off the top 50 in baseball! The guy transcended the guitar and did things with it that had never been done before! On every list that I've seen prior to this one, Van Halen was in the top 10, nevermind the top 70! I am incredulous!

This sucks!

Why in the world is Eddie Van Halen at #70? That totally shows that the list is bogus. I would think that he would have to be somewhere in the top 10 or top 20 at least.

I've always hated Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing. Horrible in my opinion, so glad to see him at #70. And MBH, Satriani better than the Edge!?!? damn it man are you crazy. Remember this list is not about technical skills. If it were than Van Halen, Satriani, etc... would be very high on the list. The Edge is on there for his unique perspective on the instrument, and his totally unique playing style and use of musical atmosphere.

That said - Jack White!?!?!? Curt Cobain!?!?!?!? Hammet!?!?!?

Henrix being at #1 is the only spot on the list that I AGREE with. Nobody can touch Hendrix... NOBODY!!!

David Gilmour... 82!!! WTF?

Who are the add-wizards that came up with this list?

Have any of you really sat and listened to Elephant? Jack White is one of the most innovative and talented guitar players to come along in recent years. Whether or not you are bugged by the hype around the White Stripes (much of which is well deserved), Jack White's guitar playing is not all hype - this guy is the real deal on guitar. If you still have doubt, check out the White Stripes in concert.

I like the White Stripe, but he fucks up all the time! Style wise, he's punk/blues, nothing new. He's good though, just not 17 of all time.

Who doesn't fuck up when they're playing? Shit, he doesn't even use a set-list when they perform. He doesn't even rehearse. He's punk/blues.. nothing new? Perhaps you should listen to "Ball and Biscuit" and tell me if anything in recent years has some close to that sort of deliciously filthy rock.

The punk/blues tag on him is media-created - not what is actually the truth, or an accurate description.

Well, different opinions we have. Most of my top 10 of all time aren't even on this list, and that make Jack White stick out even more.
