U2 plan to rock 200,000

U2 are being lined up to rock 200,000 fans at Phoenix Park next summer, The Irish Mirror can reveal.

The Dublin super group will stage the record-breaking shows in August as part of a huge tour. Madonna was originally approached to perform but said she had no plans to tour next year. So U2 have stepped in and vowed to stage the biggest show ever in Ireland.

A source close to the group said yesterday: "They will perform two nights at Phoenix Park in front of 100,000 fans on each occasion. "It's going to be the biggest music event of its kind ever staged in Ireland and it's perfect for U2.

"They are really excited about it and will have the new album out by then so it's perfect timing."

Robbie Williams sold out this Phoenix Park spectacular to 135,000 earlier this month and fans proclaimed the venue a hit.

Bono and the lads have been in the studio recording material for a new album which is set for release early next year. A world tour is also in the planning stages although no official dates have been confirmed. The source added: "This will be the biggest thing U2 have ever done.

"It may seem like a long way away but two concerts of this size take a long time to plan.

"It's all in the preliminary stages but U2 are up for it and everything is in place to make it happen.

"They want to have their biggest ever concert on their home territory."

U2 last thrilled their Irish fans when they headlined Slane in August 2001. The band set a new record for the highest grossing tour in America and sold out 70 venues around the world. The source added: "The last tour was mainly indoor arenas, this time they are going to go back to the open air stadium concerts.

"However, the Phoenix Park shows will be the biggest they have ever done. It's going to be a magical night for everyone."

Thanks to bonosloveslave and sue4u2!

That's pretty freaking cool. I've been to Phoenix Park. Of course, U2 wasn't playing there at the time...

I like this quote the best of all. Makes me very hopeful.

I particularly enjoy this paragraph. It means that they are for sure gonna be on tour by next summer at the latest!!! :hyper: :combust:

I think that if it's gonna be stadium tours, the album will equal bigger harder sound for bigger venues!!! :D:D:D:D:D

Oh...brb. Gotta change my underwear. :sexywink:

The Biggest Concert U2 have ever played so far was on the POPMART tour. U2 played to a sold out crowd of 150,000 Italians in Reggio Emilia.

Here are the stats for that show:

Reggio Emilia September 20, 1997 : Festival Site : GROSS: $5,294,117 ATTENDANCE: 150,000 SHOWS: 1 SELLOUTS: 1

Definitely! U2 did an amazing job playing arenas last time, but the truth is that their music and stage presence is so epic in scope that it's almost too big for indoor venues.

Under the stars is where they definitely belong.
I'm hoping for ZooTV * 1000!

Outstanding point! ATYCLB cross-pollinated with Achtung Baby is what I'm hoping for!

:hmm: ...I'm not so sure about the stadium gig.

I like the closeness of the indoor area, and you don't have to worry about the weather. I would rather for them to stay a couple of nights in town rather than one big night.

Keep in mind that I loved U2 in arenas last time. It was great. But scheduling-wise, it's harder on the band, especially Bono. With arenas, they were almost always doing back2back shows, and that's just hard on his voice. Plus, they did over 100 shows between late March and early December. That's a lot for a young band, let alone a band in their 40s. I think that they said they want to perform less dates on this tour. They also want more days off. Like, at least have a day or two off between different cities. It'll be easier on his voice, giving a better performance as a result.

I don't know that they could do a full stadium tour in America. Maybe they could. Who's to say? All the Elevation shows sold out in a matter of days if not hours. The whole tour was sold out before it even began, and tickets were mostly 80-90 bucks. Imagine if they were in the $40-50 range. Who's to say they couldn't sell out a stadium in Ohio at that rate? They have redeemed themselves as rock legends, picked up a shitload of new fans as well as re-attracted some old fans, and they'll hopefully pick up more with this next album.

I'm excited about the possibility of a stadium tour. It's amazing to experience 50,000 people celebrating music together.

Instead of having, for example, three different shows in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton, U2 can just have one or two mother stadium shows in Cleveland and/or Cincy. I think U2 could easily sell 120,000 or so tickets for any two stadium shows, but let's just hope they space them out better than they did in PopMart (i.e. not having major shows in close proximity and in close timeframe to each other).

this is great news... but i'm still hoping for my own dream U2 concert...

Hmmm, sounds to me like they might be scheduling tour dates before the album is finished. Didn't they learn their lesson from what happened with Pop?

I'm not saying Pop is a bad album, but the band themselves have admitted the album was not properly finished because they ran out of time before the tour started.

I mean this is only 1 confirmed show, but if they have already scheduled one, who knows how many others are already planned.
