Morissette, Mullen Join Shortlist Panel

Alanis Morissette and U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. have joined the "listmakers" panel for the second annual Shortlist Music Prize. Along with the addition of Chicago Tribune music journalist Greg Kot, a total of 23 artists, producers, filmmakers, journalists, and radio personalities now make up the group that will decide this year's winner. As previously reported, Blur's Damon Albarn, India.Arie, Beck, Mos Def, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, Paul Oakenfold, Jill Scott, Iggy Pop, and Metallica's Lars Ulrich are among the artists on the panel.

"Enlisting Larry Mullen, Jr. of U2 and Alanis Morissette to be Listmakers reflects the growth of the Shortlist Music Project, and shows that our mission to expose and share left-of-center musical discoveries is gaining support and momentum among some pretty incredible artists," co-founder Tom Sarig said in a statement. Sarig founded the Shortlist Organization last year with fellow music industry veteran Greg Spotts.

The Shortlist process begins this month with each listmaker nominating five albums that have been released in the U.S. between July 2001 and August this year that have sold more than 500,000 copies at the time of their nomination. From a long list that includes each listmaker's selections, the panel members then select their top-10 albums, with the top vote-getters becoming Shortlist finalists. The winner will be selected by the listmakers at an Oct. 29 awards ceremony and concert at Los Angeles' Knitting Factory.

"The Shortlist Music Prize is awarded to the most creative and accomplished album by an emerging artist," Sarig added. "It's simple. It's artists you know turning you on to other artists you may not know." Next year Sarig and Spotts plan to add another dimension to their endeavor with the creation of the Shortlist Fiction Project.

Last year's inaugural event saw Listmakers that included Beck, Macy Gray, Aimee Mann, Mos Def, and Thompson choose Icelandic rock act Sigur Ros as the first Shortlist Music Prize honoree. The group received $10,000 and a $10,000 donation in its name to a Sept. 11th relief charity of its choice. Sigur Ros and fellow finalists Talib Kweli, Dandy Warhols, and Nikka Costa performed during the ceremony.
