U2 are to release a brand new single and 'BEST OF...' compilation this coming autumn, NME.COM can reveal.

A provisional release date for the single has been set for October 21. It is unclear what the single will be, though for the last few weeks U2 have been streaming snippets of 'The Hands That Built America', the song they have written for Martin Scorsese's long-awaited 'Gangs Of New York' epic, on their official site at www.u2.com.

A Swiss fansite - u2swisshome.com also claims a new 'Best Of', from 1990-2000, will follow on November 18. A spokesperson for the band could not confirm the date, though a source close to U2's label told NME.COM that the collection was in the works and that a November date had been mooted. The new single will feature on the 17-track album.

A DVD of the band's greatest hits, including videos to all tracks and a number of additional extras, will appear in early December, rounding up a crowded few weeks of U2 releases. A DVD filmed at the second of the band's historic two Slane Castle shows from 2001 is also in the offering.
