Ireland to host newspaper congress
By M?che?l Lehane

BONO and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will address the World Newspaper Congress, which will held here for the first time in June.

The 56th annual congress, organised by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), will bring more than 1,000 media experts to Dublin.

Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O?Donoghue said the congress was good news for the country and ?a strong and very welcome endorsement of Ireland?s reputation as a leader in areas like media, technology, communications and infrastructure.?

Gavin O?Reilly, Chairman of the National Newspapers of Ireland, praised the WAN for selecting Ireland to host the congress, which will look at newspaper trends in more than 60 countries. ?This is the biggest and most prestigious newspaper event that?s ever taken place in Ireland,? said Mr O?Reilly.

WAN President Dr Seok Hyun Hong said the event came at a time of considerable change and challenge for the global newspaper industry.

Dr Hong is the CEO of the 2.2 million circulation JoongAng Ilbo newspaper in Korea.

Speakers at the congress, which runs from June 8 to 11, will include, Lord Conrad Black, one of the world?s most outspoken media owners, Dean Singleton, whose MediaNews Group revives newspapers in the US, and Mathias D?pfner, Chairman of Germany?s Axel Springer Group.

The effect of the Iraqi war on journalism will be discussed by leading reporters such as the BBC?s Nik Gowing and Robert Fisk of the London Independent.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists will receive the Golden Pen of Freedom for courageous resistance to media repression by President Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The Forum will also examine issues like ?Journalism Under Threat,? and ?Information in Crises and Emergencies.?

These debates will be attended by journalists working in difficult conditions, including Aliaksandr Antsipenka from Belarus, Pius Njaw? from Cameroon, Bharat Koirala, Nepal, and Rafael Marques de Morais from Angola.

That should be interesting...even though the newspaper industry is doing poorly.
