BONO UP FOR PEACE PRIZE
Rock star Bono has been nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.
The Irish singer is among 150 nominees for the 2003 honour - alongside Pope John Paul.
U2 frontman Bono has campaigned tirelessly to eradicate third world debt.
Czech President Vaclav Havel and French President Jacques Chirac have also been nominated.
They have been joined by George Ryan, the former governor of Illinois who commuted the sentences of more than 150 people on death row.
Officials said chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, will be favourites if they help avert war in Iraq.
Stein Toennesson, the director of the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, said: "If they succeed in getting Iraq to disarm sufficiently to prevent the United States and Britain from going to war, then they deserve it."
The $1m prize, named after Sweden's Alfred Nobel, is due to be awarded in October.
