This song is not a rebel song

? To a whole generation of music fans, Red Rocks Amphitheatre forever will be synonymous with U2, the Irish megaband that began its meteoric ascent with an earnest, weather-battered performance at the 9,000-seat Morrison venue in 1983.

Now, more than two decades after that concert produced U2's "Under a Blood Red Sky" film, the city of Denver ? which owns the amphitheater ? has taken possession of dozens of reels of the original one-inch film used to record that rain-soaked concert. The boxes of film have spent the last 20 years in a the basement of an unidentified Denver man, who still owns the reels.

Erik Dyce, marketing director for Denver's Division of Theatres and Arenas, says the city is in talks with a number of parties ? from U2's management to the band's label, Interscope ? to find out whether Red Rocks can release a portion of the tape.

"Right now there are so many different players that have to be consulted that we're taking it very slowly," says Dyce, who'd like to see Red Rocks receive permission to release or air portions of the concert that haven't been seen before. "We want to do this right."

There should be plenty of material for Dyce to choose from: U2's 20-song Red Rocks show never has been released in its entirety. The home-video version boasts 13 songs, while the Under a Blood Red Sky EP features just two songs ? "Gloria" and "Party Girl" ? that were actually recorded on the Rocks; the rest of the CD's cuts were taped at a German concert.

Imagine all the tape, maybe 3 hours or more of video with the entire concert only being half of it and the rest being behind the scenes before and after the concert. I wonder if they have video of the band in the lockeroom or wherever after the show was over, just to see their reaction?

With DVD's you can do a lot and put a hell of a lot of video on them. Perhaps we can look forward to seeing this for Christmas.

We should place bets as to what we'll see first: the Red Rocks tapes or a new album.
