Bono, Ken Burns May Appear at ASNE Meeting
Annual Event to Shake Off Beltway Mentality
By Joe Strupp
NEW YORK -- The American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) annual convention, slated for New Orleans, plans to mix an international focus with elements of the southern region's food, writers, and music. Along with the usual slate of Washington, D.C., speakers such as (possibly) President George Bush and National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, ASNE attendees also may hear from a list of guests ranging from former President Jimmy Carter to rock star Bono of Ireland's U2.
"I think it will broaden the dialogue," ASNE convention chair Rena Pederson said of the high-profile visitors, most of whom still have to confirm attendance. "It won't just be the same old Washington insider stuff."
ASNE, which holds its annual convention in Washington, D.C., most years, meets every fourth year in a city outside the Beltway. The last non-D.C. convention occurred in San Francisco in 1999. This year's schedule of events, set for April 8-11, includes sessions with Gourmet magazine Editor Ruth Reichel (formerly of The New York Times) and Wall Street Journal wine columnists Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher; a Southern writers panel led by Howell Raines, executive editor of The New York Times and Alabama native; and an address by Ken Burns, whose documentaries include works focused on jazz and The Civil War.
In addition to possibly appearances by Carter and Bono, both outspoken advocates of international peace and aid, foreign issues will receive attention with a visit from U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
A more specific schedule is expected to be released within several weeks, according to Pederson. More details can be found at ASNE's Web site, www.asne.org.
