Ganging Up in Dublin

IT?S only January, but already we have a contender for Irish party of the year that will be tough to beat.

A gang of stars, led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis, made their way to Dublin last Thursday night for the Irish premiere of Gangs of New York and a party afterwards that raised in the region of $200,000 for the Make a Wish charity that makes dreams come true for terminally ill children.

Day-Lewis was always down to be in Dublin for the opening, and he ensured that many of the film?s principals, including DiCaprio, Brendan Gleeson and Jim Broadbent, and Bono and The Edge from U2, were there. Daniel went on the publicity trail several weeks ago to drum up public interest in the event ? as if he had to! ? so that Make a Wish, one of his favorite charities, would bulk up its coffers.

All eyes, though, were focused on DiCaprio, who arrived fashionably late ? three hours, just as the film was ending at the Savoy Cinema. There were over 1,000 fans who waited in the freezing cold to catch him if they could, and he didn?t disappoint once he made the scene, as he stopped to shake hands and exchange a few words.

?It?s great to be in Ireland,? Leo said. ?We really thought it was important to come here to Ireland. The film is so much about the plight of Irish immigrants in America and how they have been an indelible part of creating New York and our country. So I really wanted to come here and show the film.?

Day-Lewis, who arrived with his wife Rebecca Miller, was in fine form. The normally camera shy star, who spends a large chunk of his time in his Co. Wicklow home, did his bit to promote the film, and said he was thrilled with the reception.

Those who ponied up the E160 admission price for the film premiere and after party at the Burlington Hotel were treated to a night that was cheap at the price. Bono and The Edge, who wrote the film?s theme song The Hands That Built America, performed at the party; they also serenaded a lucky British woman whose husband bid E17,000 at the celebrity auction for kisses with DiCaprio and Day-Lewis. The stars happily puckered up with Nicky Parker, and Bono and Edge serenaded her with All I Want Is You while the kissing was going on.

Edge showed his charitable side when he outbid DiCaprio and Bono for the right to treat little Alice Dillon, only 4, to the time of her life. Alice has leukemia, and her wish is to be a princess for a day, complete with horse-drawn carriage and all the other grand trappings. The bidding was fast and furious between the stars, and in the end it was Edge who turned out to be Princess Alice?s knight in shining armor.

Others in the crowd included Harvey Weinstein, the Miramax honcho who funded the film, directors Jim Sheridan and Neil Jordan, and former champion Irish boxer Barry McGuigan.

Leo, a noted party animal, did the Dublin club scene after the Burlington, and finished the night off in celebrity haunt Lillie?s Bordello with Bono
