Small is beautiful at the box office
January 3 2003
By Seamus Bradley

Small has become big business for Australian cinemas. In the wake of the box-office success of the second Lord of The Rings movie, a one-man documentary about American gun culture has swept U2, one of the world's biggest rock bands, from the top of the Australian documentary box-office charts.

Bowling for Columbine, made by scruffily dressed, left-leaning American satirist Michael Moore, has more than tripled the opening-week take of previous record-holder U2's 1988 documentary Rattle and Hum.

Bowling for Columbine, which opened on 16 screens on Boxing Day, took $454,600 in its first week. Rattle and Hum took $142,000.

Bowling for Columbine distributors Icon Film Distribution and Hopscotch believe the film will overtake In Bed With Madonna as the most successful documentary to be released in this country.
