I Will Follow by U2
I was on the outside when you said
You needed me
I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see.
A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by the hand
If he stops to think, he starts to cry
Oh why?
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow….
I will follow!

Ceili fought the bitterness which crept up inside her, the sense of absolute injustice. The world just wasn’t fair, and it could be especially mean to some people it seemed. Still, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Not like last time at all.

With Ember, she’d been young and completely unprepared. Beyond that, every time she would have looked at Ember she would have remembered the horrible night which had brought her into being. It would have been miserable. With this child, she told herself, she would be much better prepared. This was a child of the truest love she could ever imagine, and she would have a part of it’s father with her always now.

It was another one of those crossroads, a life changing moment in which a decision was to be made. Part of her was so scared, she wanted to simply never tell him. She didn’t want him to think she had done this in some twisted effort to get money or recognition from him. She knew, however, that it would be unfair to keep a child a secret from it’s father.

These were the things which occupied her mind as she waited for the Dr to call her back with the results of her test. Part of her even hoped she was sick, not pregnant. At least then she had no one to worry about but herself. Even as she thought it, though, she felt a strange ache inside her, as if by thinking such thoughts she was losing this beloved child who had taken her by surprise.

She had just finished with Mrs. Parker, a cranky middle aged woman who was seventy pounds over weight and refused to diet and exercise but constantly complained about the ache in her back. It was a far cry from the affable bunch of men she had gotten accustomed to working with, that much was without a doubt.

“Ceili, you have a phone call on line 2.” John informed her through the intercom. This was it. Was her life was about to change yet again? Little did she know, her life was about to be faced with more than one changes.

“Everything’s ready. We have the permits we need, the security, and the equipment is in the back of a truck along with the generator to run everything.” Bono informed Larry who was pacing nervously in the Green Bay hotel room.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this. What if she’s still pissed about the things I said to her?” He asked, more to himself than anyone else.

“If this doesn’t work, Lar, it wasn’t meant to be.” Bono assured his friend, hugging him in a tight, playful manner, patting him on the back.

*********************************************************************

She had burst into tears when the doctor had told her she wasn’t pregnant. She had expected to be relieved, but she had been so distraught John had come running. She had not realized just how much she missed Larry until she lost that last little bit of him she had found to cling to.

Stress. That was what the doctor had told her. ‘Thank you, Captain Obvious!’ she had wanted to say. She had more than enough stress in her life, and she couldn’t see a damned thing more she could do about it. Now she was cleaning her room, preparing to see her one o’clock patient, and trying to focus on anything but the emptiness inside of her.

“Ceili?” She heard John’s voice over the intercom.

“Yes, John?”

“I think you need to come out front.” He informed her, and she frowned at the intercom panel. Was something else wrong?

“Be right there.” She told him, setting down her towel and bottle of antiseptic and hurrying to investigate. The lobby was abandoned, and it wasn’t hard to figure out why. Everyone had gone outside to investigate all the noise. Ceili could hear the music as soon as she had stepped out into the hallway. Even so, it wasn’t until she saw the scene unfolding in the parking lot that her mind recognized what she was hearing.

“Oh my God!” She gasped, peeking out the window, careful not to be seen herself. It had to be the wildest thing that had ever happened around there. Probably the wildest thing that had happened in the surrounding counties. Hell, maybe in the entire state of Wisconsin, she thought, covering her mouth as she took the scene in.

There, in the parking lot of the tiny strip mall, two flatbed trucks had been turned into a makeshift stage for four of the most highly paid, most well known, and most talented musicians in the world. To make matters even more strange, the infamous lead singer was not the one clutching the microphone and belting out the lyrics with his signature style.

He, in fact, was playing the guitar. This was very strange indeed when one considered the fact that their guitarist was considered among the best guitarists, the most creative and groundbreaking with his instrument. This said guitarist was not playing his Fender stratocaster, but instead he was seated behind the drumkit, beating out the rhythm with slightly less skill.

The Bassist, in fact, was the only member of the band who remained in his element, and that was a relative statement because the music they were performing was not their own. No, in fact the song was quite familiar to most people who’d ever listened to pop music in the past. It was one of Elvis Presley’s most popular heartbreak songs. She wasn’t sure how long they’d been out there playing, but at the moment they were near the end of ‘Are you lonesome tonight’.

She could not seem to urge her feet to move from that spot, she was in such a state of shock. She watched as a crowd began to gather and Larry glanced nervously over his shoulder at Bono who nodded to his friend in a gesture of reassurance. They switched to the next song and Ceili recognized it as one of her personal Elvis favorites.

“Seven lonely days and a dozen towns ago, I reached out one night and you were gone! Don’t know why you’d run, what you’re running to or from, all I know is I want to bring you home!” The drummer belted out, his Irish accent and the immortal style of Elvis a sound which was completely unique unto Larry.

“… Finally got a ride with a preacher man who asked, where you bound on such a cold dark afternoon? As we drove on through the rain, he listened as I explained and he left me with a prayer that I’d find you! Kentucky rain keeps pouring down! And up ahead’s another town that I’ll go walking through, with the rain in my shoes, searching for you in the cold Kentucky rain! In the cold Kentucky rain!”

Finally, Ceili’s brain managed to compel her legs to move. As soon as she reached the door, two security officers who had been waiting for her escorted her through the surprised and slightly baffled crowd toward the stage.

“What are you doing?” She called out to him before they had even reached the stage.

“I’m making an arse of myself!” he informed her with a broad smile that made a warmth spread through her entire body. She laughed out loud.

“I can see that! Why?” She asked as she received a boost onto the stage from the security officer, Larry rushing to take her hand and help her up as well.

“Because you wouldn’t answer my phone calls. I had to get you to listen to me somehow.” He told her, his hand rubbing the back of his neck, a sign of how nervous and insecure he felt. She shook her head and smiled at him.

“I never got any phone calls.” She told him, and he produced her card, informing her he’d been trying to reach her there and on her cell. “This is my sisters phone number, I was making my appointments through her home phone before. She never told me you called.” She told him with a frown.

“And my cell phone has been dead for weeks. I didn’t see the point in using it, here. I only live a few miles from work and have a regular office number now.” She explained, glancing around self-conscious suddenly, as she realized everyone was staring at them.

“I’m so sorry about what I said.” Larry told her, taking her hand in both of his.

“No, you were right. I should’ve told you. I was just… I was happy and I didn’t want to face the things I was running from. It was so wrong not to tell you…” she was telling him, shaking her head emphatically.

“I missed you!” he told her, interrupting her rambling apology by taking her face in his hands and kissing her fiercely. The passion of his kiss nearly sent her stumbling backwards, and she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, holding on as much for balance as because she wanted to be closer.

A huge cheer erupted from the growing crowd which was still gathering as people arrived after receiving strange calls on their cells phones. The local news media was among the new arrivals, and it was finally starting to look more like a crowd appropriate to this group of entertainers.

“I can’t believe you guys all did this!” Ceili said, turning to the others after they had finished their kiss. “This is so crazy!” she laughed.

“I didn’t know anything about it, I was just here for my massage.” Adam informed her, acting like he was about to strip out of his clothes. The crowd cheered even as Larry and Ceili held out their hands and told him ‘No!’

“Ahem.” Bono cleared his throat, directing the sound into the microphone which Larry had abandoned. “Would you be needing this, then?” he asked, producing a familiar small velvet box from his pocket. The look on Larry’s face was priceless.

“Where did you… how?

 I was trying to edit and ran out of time... I hate that!

here's the rest of the story again!

“Where did you… how…? Did you get this out of the trash?” He asked as he took the box from his close mate, still staring in disbelief.

“It was in the trash?” Edge asked.

“Only for a tiny bit.” Bono told him, holding up one hand and gesturing with his thumb and forefinger. “Split second, really.”

“Ceili, It doesn’t matter what your answer is, I bought it for you and I want you to have it.” Larry started, and Bono shook his head dramatically, covering his eyes with his hand as if embarrassed.

“If yer gonna do it, do it right at least!” he said, again speaking into the mic. He was the eternal entertainer, on stage and off, but at the moment he was aware he had lots of peoples attention. He grabbed Larry’s shoulders and tried to push him down onto his knees.

Larry shrugged his friend off with playful irritation.

“Ok, ok, I can do it myself!” he told him, turning back to Ceili who stared at him with wide eyes.

“I don’t want to rush anything or assume anything, pressure you. But the truth is…” he told her, sinking to one knee and making her clasp one hand over her mouth in shock, her heart lodged up in her throat, it seemed, rather than beating normally in her chest.

“Someday, I hope, I’d like to marry you. If you could find it in your heart.” He said, as Bono snuck up around beside him and held the mic out for everyone to hear. The crowd cheered wildly as Ceili kissed Larry, still down on one knee, tears rolling down her face now.

“Is that a yes?” he asked, rising to stand before her, clutching her hand. Bono leaned in with the microphone in her face.

“If I say yes, will you stop singing?” she asked playfully, wiping the tears from her cheeks with her free hand. Larry drew her into a tight hug, lifting her off her feet and laughing.

“I think that’s a yes!” Bono announced and Ceili nodded her head in agreement. Bono turned to Adam and Edge, who had reclaimed his guitar and cued them to start a song, this time just the final verse of an all too familiar song to Ceili. For the first time in her life, she actually liked the sound of Simon and Garfunkles melody as it reached her ears.

“Cecilia! I’m down on my knees, begging you please to come home! Jubilation, she loves me again! Woah-oh-oh-oh…” Larry kissed her again as Bono continued to sing “Jubilation, she loves me again!” and the crowd began to dance and sing along.

“I never stopped.” She whispered in Larry’s ear.

“What?”

“I never stopped loving you!” she said, louder this time, and he turned to her and smiled roguishly.

“I know.” He told her, his silver eyes twinkling. She wrinkled her nose at him and he told her “I will never stop loving you.”

“One more? C’mon, let’s do one of ours.” Bono declared, patting Larry on the shoulder. Once that man got in front of a crowd, he was unstoppable.

“Duty calls.” Ceili told him, nodding toward the drum set. Larry smiled and kissed her once more before responding to his friends desire to make some serious music.

“Oh, one quick question…” Ceili said, catching up to him. “Any way you can replace Ember’s stuff? I have a feeling she’s going to want it back.”

-The End

Hopeless romantic clap-trap… Hope you like it as much as I do!

Author’s note: This was obviously inspired in no small part by Larry’s singing. I just wanted to say that I adore it when Larry sings. It’s so cute, and I’m in no way putting him down with the teasing in my little fairy-tale. He usually sings Irish drinking songs, and if you haven’t heard him, I have one MP3 of him doing ‘Wild Irish Rover’ that makes me smile from ear to ear!

These are the images I was trying to edit into my original post when it went all arseways on me

:D Did you happen to read my story 'Stealing from the thieves'? I'm currently working on a sequel to that. I have a few fairly wild ideas for that setting/character set.

Oh, and thanks so much for the e-mail, sorry I didn't get back to you. It means the world to me that people enjoy what I write down (even those who enjoy it and don't know why! )

Hmmm... Unless people would prefer to read a Bono centered tale rather than an Adam one? Anyone have an opinion to share on which story I should get working on next?

Just on a personal note, I would say an Edge story & Adam as the voice of reason. Or a Bono story with Adam having the love/being in love interest

Edited to say: Yes I did read the other story and it was as good as this one is. Can't wait for what's next!

You're an excellent writer, go for what moves you.
