The Mystery of the Edge's Disappearing Hairline

So, as I'm sure we all know, the Edge wears his trademark skullcap because he wants to hide his receding hairline. And he's wore a variety of hats in his time with the band. But for how long has his hairline been receding?

Around 1986, 1987, the Joshua Tree era, he started wearing a cowboy hat. During the Rattle and Hum era, he also starts wearing a tophat. For the ZooTV tour, the skullcap begins making its regular appearance. During the Pop era, we actually see him without his hat at times (Miss Sarajevo video, pictures in Pop liner booklet) and its obviously by now, he's balding, although he continues wearing the cowboy hat. For the last 2 tours, he's gone back to the skullcap.

So, did the Edge start wearing hats in general to hide his receding hairline, or was it just convenient that once he started wearing them, his hair started falling out?

Anyone want to shed some light on the subject?

I heard he has trichotillomania. I'm unsure where I heard this from but I think that's his main reason for wearing the beanie.

This is true, I know a few guys who have either nearly no hair on top or a bald spot in back and they lost it in their 20s. It doesn't matter to me for The Edge or the guys that I know.

BTW, if you watch the Under A Blood Red Sky video, sometimes you can see shots of the back of the Edge's head, and you can see it thinning at the crown. So he was starting to lose it around 23-24.

But as Mrs Springsteen said, Edge is a beautiful man, with or without hair.

He's one of the few men on earth who actually looks good in a goatee. Many think they do, but alas. Hence, hat or no hat, it's moot as Edge looks great with facial hair.

It isn't a big deal. I'm sure the beanie has more to do with his quote unquote image than anything else. If he was embarassed about his hair, or lack thereof, he would not have posed beanie-less for this last year's calendar.

Edge wasn't hiding a neatly shaved head like he does these days, back during those eras, I fear Edge had a skullet.
