End of Chapter 11

“He’s having tea, I came out to get you, can’t have a thing of beauty like you, sitting all alone out here, now can we?” Liam smiled. This woman was astonishing, why couldn’t he have met her before his ordination he sighed...

Sadie got out the car, and shut the door. “Shouldn’t we lock the car? She questioned Liam

“No, there’s no need, although this is Dublin no one will try and take it from outside a church presbytery or from a Murphy.” He winked as he held out his hand to escort Sadie into the house.

As they walked into the church, they didn’t know that Michael was watching them. He was at the window, having moved the net curtain slightly to the side. Was it right for a priest to act that way, he wondered.

The several weeks had turned into a month so far. Sadie didn’t mind she enjoyed the company of the Murphy’s, well Ma and Conor mainly. Michael was always out on business.

She would join Conor most days in the park playing with Shamrock. It got her into the fresh air and she’d gained an insight into the person Conor was.

Today was the same as usual. As they entered the park, Conor looked at her

“Sadie, can I ask you something?” he asked shyly

“Of course you can Conor “She smiled sweetly at him

“Would you mind if I told you some stuff” he broke off, “about me.”

“No problem Con, are you alright?” She asked him, concerned why he was entrusting her with what ever this was.

“Here we’ll sit here so we can talk” Sadie said as they approached a bench. As she sat down she unhooked Shamrock’s lease and he ran off to find a stick.

Conor sat down next to her. Sometimes they had an understanding that she didn’t even share with Michael. Conor sat, staring down at the pavement, obviously finding the courage to tell Sadie his problems.

“It’s two things really. I can’t talk to anyone in the family, and you’ll understand why when I’ve told you” He looked at Sadie; she could see tears already forming in his eyes.

“I’m gay” he stopped and waited her response.

“I know you are, you always happy” She said patting his hand.

“No Sadie, I mean I’m gay as in homosexual, as in Boy George, Noel Coward, Vincent Hanley, Oscar Wilde!” He waited fearing that this news would alienate the one person he felt he could trust.

“Wow, I didn’t see that one coming” Sadie admitted. “So where’s the problem with that?”

“You don’t mind” he asked attentively

“Of course I don’t, you’re still Conor aren’t you?” She picked up his hand and held it

“Oh thank you” he squealed and hugged her tightly, relieved that he’d finally come out of the closet.

“So your brothers don’t know this I presume” Sadie teased

“My god, could you imagine if they did” The look of horror filled Conor’s eyes. “I have to be so careful not to be effeminate when I’m around them; I can’t really be myself although I think Ma knows, as she’s stopped asking me when I’ll be getting a girlfriend.”

“How long has you known?” Sadie enquired

“For sure about a year, after a few disastrous “normal” boy/girl relationships, I followed my heart and felt happier, although it didn’t last, it felt so right.” Conor sighed.

“Sometimes following your heart is the hardest thing to do, Conor”. Sadie smiled at him

Shamrock barked; he’d been sitting patiently after dropping a stick at Sadie’s feet. He nudged her knees with his nose, as if to remind her he was there.

“Aww Shammy, sorry boy” Sadie said as she picked up the stick “Fetch boy!” she commanded

Shamrock ran off waging his tail

“So what was the other thing, you wanted to say?” Sadie turned her attention back to Conor

“I don’t think I’m a Murphy” he looked at Sadie

“Of course you’re a Murphy” She reassured him

“I’m not. I don’t know if I was adopted but my mum and dad can’t be me parents.” Tears started to fall down Conor’s cheeks

“What makes you say that Conor?” Sadie was confused.

“I had a blood test, and it came back I’m type A. Both Ma & Da are O so it’s impossible that I’m at least my father’s baby. I checked it all out.” Conor sobbed.

“Hey being group A is no big deal, I’m an A too” she hugged him as he continued to cry.

They sat in silence for a while, even Shammy lay down at Sadie’s feet, and he sensed that they didn’t want to play.

“Look, it doesn’t matter; I’ll help you look for your parents, whatever it takes. I promise I’ll be there for you” Sadie whispered into his ear.

“Really?” Conor’s boyish innocence returned for a moment.

“Yeah, really really.” She smiled.

“Thanks Sadie” He put a kiss on her cheek and hugged her again

“No problem, Hey let’s get back before they sent the search party out” She laughed.

The door slammed, Sinead walked into the kitchen, dumping her school bag on the kitchen table.

“Hi Mickey” she said standing on her toes to plant a big kiss on his cheek.

“Hi babycakes”, Michael loved his one and only sister dearly. He had to admit that girl was spoilt rotten by all her brothers.” What you want?”

“Do I have to want anything to give you a kiss?” She smiled sweetly

“Yes”, he abruptly answered. ”Where on earth are they?”

“Who?” she said, scheming how to ask her brother for some cash for booze.

“Sadie and Conor” He replied. “They went out over an hour ago, with Shamrock”

Bulls’ eye. She had her way in. “I’ve seen them” she said teasingly

“Where?” Michael looked at her

“It’ll cost you, ten pounds” Sinead held out her hand.

“Cheeky thing” Michael looked at her, he wasn’t going to give way this time.

“Well it’s pretty juicy, actually?” Sinead was an expert at getting her way especially with Michael.

“What’s juicy mean?” Michael’s mind was running over time. What could Sadie have been doing with Conor.

“Well as I said that info costs” She held her hand out once more. A new crisp ten pound note landed in her palm. She stuffed it into her skirt pocket and looked at Michael, making her way to the kitchen door; this could bring on one of his moods she thought.

“I saw them sitting on a bench in the park, kissing and cuddling” She quickly ran up the stairs to her room, shutting the door firmly behind her.

Michael sat at the table: my god was Sadie planning to screw all the Murphy men? I mean she already had Liam & Danny running after her like lap dogs, now Conor as well it seemed. Who next Jimmy, Paddy, Paul, Matt, Tommy or even his Da? Sadie needed to be taught some respect; she needed to know she couldn’t mess with Michael Murphy.

Kim closed the locker door. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her new uniform all shinny and starchy. Her new number AB6969 on her lapel, of all the numbers she had to get that one didn’t she, she knew the blokes would rip her endlessly over it. She smoothed her uniform once more then headed towards the briefing room.

“Morning everyone” the Sarge walked into the room

“Morning Sarge” they responded in unison

“Right firstly as you’ll be aware we have a new face amongst us. I hope everyone will give a warm Holloway Road welcome to WPC Mullens who’s joined us from the Devonshire district”

Kim waved and smiled at everyone, disappointedly there wasn’t a lot of eye candy.

She listened to the blah blah as he read out the rota. He hadn’t called out her name, maybe she’d missed it

“Sarge” Kim raised her hand.

“Yes Mullens” he responded

“I’m not on a rota,” Kim looked around, trying not to feel embarrassed as the shift all looked at the new girl.

“Ah yes. The DI wants to see you directly after this meeting has finished.” He smiled at her

There was a buzz as the other pc’s wondered what that was all about.

“Right any other business? NO Right off you go then.” He commanded.

Kim walked up to him “Sarge, where’s CID? “

He looked at Kim and smiled, “ That WPC Mullens is your first challenge”

She stood there as Sarge walked off. She wondered if she was being tested. No problem she was sure she’d be able to find CID. She walked to the stairway and up the stairs, thanking the person who’d put up signs.

She walked through the room towards the DI’s office, she could feel all the men’s eyes on her as she walked through. She wondered if they had any women on their CID as she couldn’t see any. She knocked quietly on the door.

“Come in” a deep male voice boomed.

Kim opened the door , turning to shut it firmly behind her.

“Ahhh so you must be our new wpc” the DI looked her over as she approached his desk

“Yes sir I am” Kim replied.

“Please call me Guv, would you like to take a seat WPC Mullens.”

“Thanks Guv” She looked at him. So there was some good looking men here after all. Just as she liked them tall dark and handsome, with intense blue eyes.

“ I understand you’ve come up from the sticks to try for promotion. Now I have a big case I’m working on. I need a fresh face that no one around here knows to infultrate a gang. Are you up for it?” he looked her over again, “god she’s a goodlooking girl” he thought

“Yes Guv”.Kim couldn’t believe it. Her first day and she was working in CID

“Now obviously this isn’t a promotion, but who knows, perform well get results you never know.” He smiled at her. “ What’s your name?”

“It’s Kim, Guv.” She smiled

“ So Kim, here’s the story. A gangster by the name of Michael Murphy has been expanding his “Import/export” business which to you and I means, Protection rackets, drugs, and he’s recently branched out into prostitution. He’s got this new girlfriend, Sadie Murray, background checks prove she’s legit, no record and as far as we’re aware she has no idea what he does for a living” he paused as he passed the file to Kim to examine.

She looked at the photo of the couple.

“What is it Kim, you look like you’ve seen a ghost” the guv queried

“In a way I have Guv. I meet Sadie at a U2 gig around a month ago. Believe me she hasn’t a clue what he does. She was a really sweet girl too” Kim looked at him

“What about Murphy?”

“I didn’t have any comtact with him at all. Sadie doesn’t know what I do for a living.”

“Great, that’s even better. She’ll know you so is more likely to trust you.” The guv smiled.

“So what happens now” Kim asked excitedly

“At the moment they seem to be having a longer than expected Holiday back in Dublin. We’re working with the Garda on this one but they seem to take an age doing anything. So whilst they’re there we need to get you moved into the local community. Get you settled in, get your face known. Got any talents?” he looked at her, he could see two now.

“Many, or so I’m told” she laughed.

“Really? Well that’s intersting to know, but I meant artistic.” The guv smiled, he liked her cheekiness

“I can paint” Kim tried to keep a straight face.

“That’d be a good cover, a struggling artist! Something that can be left so you can hang around with Sadie. Get to know her, better than she knows herself.

“I can do that no problem Guv.” Kim looked at him

“That’s my girl” He stared at her.

Was that lust she saw in his eyes??

“All the records are kept in this room Father” the sister gestured Liam into the room she had just unlocked.

“Bless you my child” He smiled at her, “Sometimes I think the Lord sends these things to try us”

“Indeed he does Father, indeed he does,” She agreed with him. “Now can I get you anything Father?”

“No I’m grand thank you Sister Marie,” he slipped his jacket off, hanging it onto the back of a chair.

“So then, I’ll be leaving you to your business, I have many souls to help out there”, she smiled and walked out of the room, closing the door behind her.

Liam looked at all the shelves. He gulped wondering where to begin. “Eejit” he muttered, start looking for the year would help.

It took him a while but eventually he found the ledger he was searching for June to September 1963.He took the book down from the shelf and returned to the desk. He opened the book and run his finger down the pages looking for the name, and then there it was staring up at him from the page.

Wow that was unbelievable but there it was in black and white…..

.“Lord you really are trying me aren’t you” Liam raised his eyes to the heavens. What was he going to do now?

U2 @ Bayou Club
By Harry Sumrall

‘Forget the other groups. Remember U2. The Dublin based group appeared last night at the Bayou and this city’s perception of New wave may never be the same. Tearing away at the crowd with searing guitar solos and jitter, electronically echoed vocals, U2 also brought to their performance a sense of refinement that has been lacking in rock for some time. U2 like The Police and The Clash are taking new wave to the next, higher, musical level. Their music is still simple but never simplistic – and simply marvellous.’

Edge read the review after he’d cut it carefully out of the paper. He put the a little glue on each corner and stuck it in his review scrapbook. He wasn’t sure whether he was happy about being called new wave.

Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, New York; all the cities blurred into one as the U2 tour bus made its way around the US. Some gigs were sold out in the old Irish haunts but some weren’t but the message of this new Irish band was reaching the ears of the music loving public.

Drive, drive, drive was all they seemed to do, endless hours sitting on the cramped bus, as it made it’s way from town to town.

Bono starred out the window taking in the sights the bus past, looking for inspiration for his lyrics. More often than not his mind wandered back to Dublin and Sadie. He had no way of contacting her, he wondered if she was safe, was she still in Dublin? He was sure his heart would know if she was hurt.

Adam was always in a state of lingering tiredness from sleeping on the bus as it made its way through the darkness of night to the next town, the next venue. The only relief an occasional pit stop at some truck stop. Where they could get out and fool around or in Bono’s & Edge’s case buy cowboy boots. He was busy having a really good time, drinking, smoking and partying. He spent a lot of time with Paul who always found somewhere to go. Bono, Edge and Larry had their prayer meetings, either using the back of the bus or their motel rooms. He didn’t understand why they done that to be honest he’d thought he’d joined a rock ‘n’ roll band; not some religious sect who carried bibles in their cases.

Larry enjoyed their prayer meetings. They were a safe haven during the up & downs of touring. There were things that he and the band didn’t like doing. The band were beginning to attract more pretty girls that just hang about backstage wanting to be taken advantage of. Not that he would and he didn’t want anyone else to either. That’s why he had persuaded the band to introduce the no sexual favours for backstage passes policy, or NOSE for short.

The bus continued on to next venue, at least they had tomorrow off, well it was St Patrick’s day after all.

********************************************************************************************************************

Sadie woke up; she walked over to the window pulling back the curtain to find a beautiful day had dawned.

“Wow a sunny St.Paddy’s day!” she chuckled.

She really didn’t feel excited about her birthday. She was 21 yet felt a lot older in ways. She had tried to suggest to Michael she’d like to go out but so far he’d only said he’d take her to the parade through Dublin. He knew it was her birthday but didn’t seem interested.

Sadie showered and dressed, walking downstairs.

“Morning Sadie”, Annie smiled, “Happy Birthday sweetie”, Annie walked over to her and handed her a card

“Thanks Ma, you didn’t have to” Sadie sat down at the table and opened the card.

Thump thump the sound of someone running down the stairs. Conor run into the kitchen and hugged Sadie.

“Happyyyyy Birthdayyyyyyyy Sweetieeeee” he shrieked like a girl. He placed a card and a present onto the table.” Open it, open it” he sounded so excited.

“Ok, calm down” she stared at him “You’re acting camp in front of your ma” she whispered.

“It’s ok, I told her” he beamed. “Telling you, gave me the courage to tell her”

Annie smiled at her son. She hid her disappointment, it wasn’t that she didn’t want him to be happy, or she was ashamed. It was against God’s commandments, however it would never change the fact that he was still her son, and she’d defend him to the last.. The thing that scared her was the other men finding out. She and Conor had agreed that the rest of the family need not know until the time was right.

Sadie & Annie exchanged a smile. Sadie was glad Conor could confide in his mum, she wish she was as close to hers.

“Sadie Murray, will you open that pressie now!!” Conor tried to be mad with her.

Sadie unwrapped the present. She opened the lid of the little box. Inside she found the most enchanting little silver heart locket. “Oh Conor you shouldn’t have, it’s beautiful” she leant over and placed a kiss on his cheek.

“Open it” he encouraged. He was delighted that she loved it.

Sadie opened the locket, inside was a guardian angel. It touched her greatly that Conor had gone to so much trouble for her.

“It’s to protect you.” Conor looked at Sadie” so that you always remember that you’re not alone.”

Sadie hugged him again; she wished her brother had lived so she could feel what it was like to love a real brother.

“Michael Sr and I haven’t forgotten you, dear. We asked Michael what you’d like and he didn’t have a clue. So we’ll go out shopping next week, my treat” Annie told Sadie.

“Thanks Ma, that’s no problem.” Sadie hugged and kissed her.

“Come on let’s go into the lounge so we can see your pendant on” Conor said excitedly.

They ran like two teenagers into the lounge, and stood in front of the mirror.

“Lift you hair, Sadie” Conor instructed as he removed the locket from its box.

Sadie lifted her hair, exposing her slender delicate neck.

“Wow you have the most gorgeous neck” Conor said admiring her beauty

“Thanks. Have you got the catch in yet?”

“There you go sweetie” Conor smiled.

“It looks adorable” Sadie said, she truly loved his simple gift as she looked in the mirror. “Come here; let me give you a kiss”

She placed an innocent kiss on his lips. “Love you Conor”

“I love you to Sadie” he smiled.

Neither of then saw Michael; standing silently in the doorway. Sadie really needed to be shown how to respect him, she’d kissed his younger brother in the house, and his mother was only feet away. She really had to be stopped before she’s had all the Murphy men. How he didn’t know yet, but she’d be taught a lesson that was for sure.

********************************************************************************************************************

Kim walked into The Dublin Castle. It was a right old world Irish pub with Danny Boy playing on the juke box.

“Hiya, what can I get you?” the barman asked.

“A white wine please.” She smiled at him as she took a seat at the bar.

“Haven’t seen you before, you new around here?” He asked

“Yeah, I’ve just moved up from the country. Sorry how rude of me, my name’s Kim Mitchell” she extended her hand for him to shake.

“Well welcome Kim, I’m Paddy the landlord and that beautiful young lady over there is me wife, Molly” he said as he firmly shook her hand.

Kim surveyed the pub; this was where the ó Murchadha hang out. Her objective at the moment was just to blend into the surroundings, get her face known.

She felt someone staring at her. She stared back at him. She knew his face from somewhere.

Gloomy had spotted her as she’d walked in. He’d liked her immediately; she was his type of girl. He had nothing to lose; surely hanging with Michael Murphy would have taught him something about charming the ladies. He stood up picked up his pint and walked towards her.

********************************************************************************************************************

Sadie lay on her bed. She stared up at the ceiling day dreaming of Bono and what he was doing now. He didn’t even know it was her birthday but wherever he was, she was sure that he would celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

Her thoughts were interrupted as the door burst open. It was Michael

“Put this on, and pack an overnight bag, we’re staying in town tonight” he commanded as he threw some clothes at her, turned and stormed straight out.

What was that all about? No Happy Birthday, no I Love you, just do this do that. What was he mad about? Sadie was sure she hadn’t upset him but who knew with Michael.

She held up the clothes, what a surprise, short and low cut. Michael seemed to get off on her dressing like a hooker. She didn’t mind tight and showy but Michael always got her stuff that just went too far, made her look trashy.

He must have something planned. If they were staying in town that meant he wanted her body. Well he had a lot of making up to do before she gave him what he wanted.

********************************************************************************************************************

Liam dreaded the phone ringing, he was avoiding Mickey. Every time he asked how the inquiries into Conor were going Liam told him they were still ongoing, but he knew that he couldn’t put Mickey off for too much longer.

To be honest, he had to figure it out in his own head before imparting the information onto Michael. He knew what it meant but it meant the possible destruction of all he cherished and he wasn’t ready for that.

The phone started ringing.

“Mrs Doyle” Liam called to the housekeeper

“I know, you’re not here” she tattered

“Hello St.Augustine’s presbytery.” She looked at Father Liam, “No Michael I’m afraid he isn’t, he has hospital visits today… I will pass that message on… Bye bye”

“Thanks Mrs Doyle” Liam smiled

“Whatever the reason you’re avoiding Michael for, you really should confront. Our Lord would do you know” she spoke to Liam in her stern manner.

“I know Mrs Doyle, I know” Liam sighed.

********************************************************************************************************************

“Oh Michael you haven’t?!” Sadie shrieked

“Haven’t what?” He smiled

“Booked the Princess Grace suite again.” Sadie could see the Shelbourne Hotel on the other side of the square.

“Happy Birthday Sadie! Only the best for my girl on her 21st Birthday.” Michael grinned.

“I really thought you’d forgotten” she looked down feeling guilty it had ever entered her mind.

“How could I forget? You’re one of the most important things in my life, Sadie” Michael beamed at her

Sadie pondered that comment. If she was the most important thing in his life why did he act all dominant over her? Why did he treat her like crap? Why didn’t he make her feel like she WAS the most important thing to him. She really didn’t think she knew him sometimes. Then on the other hand like today, he’d go out of his way to do something nice and romantic. Men were weird.

********************************************************************************************************************

“Hi, may I sit next to you?” The cute Irishman asked Kim

Kim felt her pulse quicken, “Sure”, try and remain cool she thought to herself.

He sat himself on the stool next to her.

“I’m Martin McAuley, but my friends call me Gloomy” he smiled holding out his hand to her

“Nice to meet you Martin, I’m Kim” before she could finish her sentence...

“I bet your last name must be Jacobs?” he smirked at her

“Why do you say that?” Kim queried.

“Because I think you’re a real cracker” Martin cringed as he said it.

Kim chuckled. “No it’s actually Mitchell.” This guy was cute and Irish; she’d humour him for a little while.

“Please call me Gloomy. I haven’t seen you in these parts before” he asked her

“No I just move up from the country, so just finding my way around London. And you don’t sound like you’re from around here either.” Kim already knew his background, but it was fun teasing him

“No I’m from Dublin. Moved here a few years back”, Gloomy looked deeply into her eyes.

They sat in an awkward silence for a while.

“If you were a lolly I would be licking you all night!” Gloomy said to Kim

They looked at each other and burst into laughter.

“Those lines are absolutely awful, aren’t they??” he laughed

“Yeah, not very impressive to be honest” Kim giggled.

“I only wanted to ask you out, on a date like.” Gloomy felt a reddener coming on. How embarrassing.

“Well that’d be cool when?” Kim asked. Yeah surely it wouldn’t hurt to have a bit of fun. At the end of the day she was a woman with needs. Anyway surely going out with him would help the case. He probably would let things slip to his girlfriend.

“Really? Those corny lines didn’t blow my chances? Gloomy was shocked she’d agreed

“No, you seem like a nice boy. Although I warn you I can be a very naughty girl if I want to” She flirted with this cool Irish guy.

“What about now?” Gloomy ventured

“Why not”, Kim smiled.
