It isn't on for about 10 more hours.

I'm so glad I saw the mention of Edge performing on the Stand Up to Cancer show tomorrow, too! It's going to be an Edge-filled day!

Here it is at last, as promised the article about U2 from the Finnish music magazine Rytmi....

The headline title says: U2 HOW TO BECOME MAMMOTH?

U2
The Irish foursome have been on the verge of bankruptcy, but the risk was worth it.

A MATTER OF FAITH

In this section of the article the writer Pasi Kostiainen, talks briefly about U2's two Helsinki gigs, and the number of people who attended them, 106 000 that also filled up all the inner cities pubs and restaurants over the weekend. And that even though the gigs were a huge success, there were some residents who just wanted to escape the mayhem U2 brought with them, like one of his friends, Mikko, who went to Lisbon! At the end of the paragraph, he asks why does U2 sometimes invoke such strong feelings of hate that one has to escape?

No words!

The center quote says: The bank is like a conscience that you can't run away from

In this section of the text the writer ponders what is it about U2 that makes them so popular, and again asks why does U2 invoke just strong feelings for and against! Coz the same doesn't seem to happen with other big name bands like Metallica or the Rolling stones. But without waiting for a reply, he answers why he thinks U2 is both the biggest and the most important band in the world.

Bono isn't cool - but that's a good thing

Bono is a ad mans dream name, claims Pasi, it's a name that can be understood in many languages and goes on the say the Bono isn't the perfect rock icon that he isn't cool like other big name lead singers and also that U2 fashion style is very questionable ! But that the fact Bono isn't cool is what makes him so special, and his sunnies are maybe the only concession to rock stardom.

Also he finds Bono to be a exceptional performer and that even his critics have to admit that Bono is unique and that without Bono's charismatic stage presence U2 would have remained a small provicial band.

Paragraph title from previous page It's annoying to be on the side of good and he goes on the list all the causes that U2 support, and question why does U2 support of such causes annoy so many people? Surely no one supports the oppressive Burma government or begrudges Edge's Music Rising efforts to bring instruments to Cathrine Hurricane victims? He comes to the conclusion that many believe U2 activism to be insincere, that they do it just for publicity and also that some people don't like being remained of their own inadequate conscience!

And he contends that U2 have to some extent benefited commercially from their involment with e.g. Live Aid etc. but so what? What's wrong with taking a few minutes to reflex on say the unjust fate of Aung San Suu Kyi during the course of a U2 concert? Even if listening to Walk On won't bring about her freedom, but at least you were able to join in with the protest. So why should U2 waste their power of persuasion on just entertaining their audience?

Not just empty words again the title of the paragraph from the previous page

In this section Pasi goes on to point out U2 has actually had some success with their campaigns and how Bono has just over the last 10 years or so started to use his influence over the world leaders like Presidents Bush and Obama etc. and mentions how such meetings (with Bush) didn't always sit well with his fellow band mates.

The quote says "Bono lack of coolness is his public image -it's one of U2's most important factors"

In the end it's all about the music

In this paragraph he talks about U2s music and how I will follow is still has popular as ever, even though the band has been through many stages with their venture into gospel and blues and following in Bowies footsteps to Berlin over the last 30 odd years, U2 have always sounded like U2. And despite performing with other musicians like BB King and Dylan....

Bono has always sounded like Bono and no one can play guitar quite like The Edge. U2 songs are always melodic and akin to one another.

Is U2 big or small?

He concludes that U2 is big, grand and over the top. But also in amazing way small, the lack of cool makes them down to earth and approachable and maybe that' the secret of their success. The band is like a conscience you that won't let you go!
