AC/DC were asked to play at the Live Aid concert in 1985, but turned down the chance to play at the charity event, which raised an estimated £100 million for famine relief and made an international celebrity activist out of Geldof.
Johnson described Geldof, who also organised the Live 8 benefit concerts in support of the Make Poverty History campaign in 2005, as a “canny lad”.
“He did what he though was right at the time but it didn’t work,” Johnson said of Geldof’s Live Aid concert. “The money didn’t go to poor people. It makes me mad when people try to use politics or charity for publicity. Do a charity gig, fair enough, but not on worldwide television.”

How totally pathetic can you be? Turning down Live Aid and attacking those who try to help. Let's talk again when we see you do something for charity, dude. :madspit:

Funnily enough, I never see Bono running around bashing other bands or artists.

“I do it myself, I don’t tell everybody I’m doing it,” Johnson, 62, told Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper.
“I don’t tell everybody they should give money – they can’t afford it. When I was a working man I didn’t want to go to a concert for some bastard to talk down to me that I should be thinking of some kid in Africa.”
He then offered some words of advice to his fellow rockers: “I’m sorry mate, do it yourself, spend some of your own money and get it done. It just makes me angry. I become all tyrannical.”

"It makes me mad when people try to use politics or charity for publicity. Do a charity gig, fair enough, but not on worldwide television.”

This only proves that AC/DC's singer has no brains  (sorry AC/DC fans, but that's my opinion )

Bono (or Bob Geldof) doesn't presume when he does something for charity and he doesn't push everyone to donate. He just wants people to know about the causes he fights for, and invites them to do what they CAN to help others. That's not an obligation: you don't necessairly have to be a generous donor to be a U2 fan, or vice versa.
He should think before accusing people next time :shame:

Yes, because it makes total sense to organise a charity event and don't tell anyone about it, just play for yourself in private

I think the guy has taken too many drugs in his life, they kind of messed up his brain. It's so cheap and easy to bash Bono and U2 these days. I don't like AC/DC's music, but I respect them as a band and acknowledge that they have a huge following and are a great live act. Still I wish some of these people would take a leaf out of U2's book and don't go around badmouthing fellow artists. Why is this his business anyway? If he thinks he can do a better job for charity, he should just do it and keep his mouth shut. Pathetic.

^ That's true. And by talking about it he is actually telling everybody.

Charity work isn't a contest. It's not about who's doing it better and who's doing it worse. People should work together instead of fighting each other. That's what I like about Bono, that he doesn't exclude anyone but instead tries to get everyone involved, no matter where they come from.

U2 Voted Best Superbowl Half time show ever

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AT 5:49AM

Its Super Bowl time here in the states and once again the question comes up as to what was the best Super Bowl Half time show. Some would say the “Janet” show now we would not even put that up as a choice but we had been out voted by the people. However U2’s powerful and emotional perfromance on Feb 3rd 2002. The band performed Beautiful Day / MLK / Where The Streets Have No Name , incorporating an amazing tribute to the victims of the September 11th attacks within the show.

After some conversation and of course looking around on the web for other polls heres what we would deem as the top 3 all time great Super Bowl Half time shows . Good Luck “Who” this weekend your going to need it against this list.

3. Diana Ross (Super Bowl XXX, 1996): We wouldn’t have believed it, either. But for about 10 minutes, Ross reverted to her disco-era awesomeness. Somehow she managed to fit in four costume changes while singing close to a d

ozen hits. She ended the performance by being lifted away in a helicopter, and her hair remained perfect - still the greatest special effect in Super Bowl history.

2. Prince (Super Bowl XLI, 2007): While several big-name artists have had trouble adapting to the medley-heavy Super Bowl halftime format (Bruce Springsteen comes to mind), Prince seemed completely at home in the over-the-top glitz of the performance. Drenched by a rainstorm, he played Jimi Hendrix and Foo Fighters covers along with three “Purple Rain” songs.

1. U2 (Super Bowl XXXVI, 2002): Even in the best years, you’re not going to hear “Super Bowl halftime show” and “classy” in the same sentence. But U2 managed to present an entertaining show, and also a respectful tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The highlight: “Where the Streets Have No Name,” while a video screen showed the names of the fallen.

Great news! :applaud:

Umm... yes I totally agree that U2's halftime show was incredible hands down and blows them all out of the water, but this poll is from a U2 fan website? Not to say it's biased but it doesn't say where exactly or how they calculated the results ( this could be just one dude's opinion, based on random surfing on the web) As quoted above : "After some conversation and of course looking around on the web for other polls heres what we would deem as the top 3 all time great Super Bowl Half time shows" ) what polls and how did you deem they worthy? haha! :) Just sayin.
I think that I would be happier if the results were from an official poll published in Rolling Stone or on CNN.com , somewhere that wasn't a fan based blog/website. You know what I mean?
Don't mean to be a party pooper but that article/poll is pretty much preaching to the choir dont' you think? And I would be very happy to discover that this was indeed the opinion of the majority of music/football fans throughout years. Wouldn't surprise me.
Wasn't there a big poll like this last year somewhere and U2 won? Too lazy too google.:|
:hmm:

I remember U2's performance every year! I was in Las Vegas with a group of friends and all the tv's were tunned in to the Super Bowl. We were in a casino (I was on the slot machines) as soon as some one shouted that it was half time I ran to the nearest bigesst tv screen and plopped myself down to watch U2, by then some friends (not u2 fans) had joined me. While my friends were suitably impressed, I was SO PROUD of my band!! :applaud:

Bono to be guest of honor at AIF New York gala dinner

The American Ireland Fund’s annual New York spring gala should easily be a sell-out this year, as Bono will be the special guest of honor.
The 35th annual dinner, set for Thursday, May 6, will take place at The Tent at Lincoln Center. Always one of the best nights on the Irish American social calendar, this year’s gala should be extra-special given the presence of Bono, one of the world’s most famous humanitarians . . . and, of course, rock stars.
The desire to provide music education to Irish schoolchildren brought U2 and the AIF together last year. Irish kids don’t learn music as a core subject in school, unlike students in most other parts of the world. In 2009, the worldwide Ireland Funds and U2 committed $10 million to bring music education to Irish schools, and U2 so far have provided $7 million in funding.
The New York dinner will undoubtedly help to provide a healthy chunk of financing for the worthy goal, so mark your calendar! For more information on the dinner, visit The Ireland Funds : The global Irish making a difference together.
