"Bono to give honour to human rights champion

U2 frontman Bono will present an award in Dublin today honouring people dedicated to defending human rights.

A shortlist of five nominees, all women, has been drawn up including those who have worked to help and protect others despite death threats, harassment and police attacks.

The 2007 Front Line Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk will be presented at a breakfast ceremony in Dublin’s City Hall.

The nominees are:

:: Akifa Aliyeva who works with a branch of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly promoting and protecting women’s, youth and environmental rights in Azerbaijan.

She has been the target of numerous death threats and labelled an enemy of the state due to her vocal criticism of the authorities and her family has also been targeted.

:: Gege Katana is the president of the Solidarity Movement of Women Human Rights Activists, based in Uvira, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and she has dedicated her life to research and campaigns against sexual violence.

:: Jackeline Rojas is the co-ordinator and legal representative for the Organisation Femenina Popular in South Bolivar, Colombia supporting political activists in the development of the social fabric in the Magdalena Medio region.

:: Radhia Nasraoui is a high-profile human rights defender and human rights lawyer from Tunisia defending political prisoners and victims of state repression.

:: Riza Fanilag works with the National Federation of Peasant Women in Mindanao, the Philippines, working to support rural peasants and campaigning against income and land inequalities.

Front Line was founded in Dublin in 2001 with the specific aim of protecting Human Rights Defenders, people who work, non-violently, for any or all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. "

From U2.com:

Bono turned to poetry this morning, presenting the Front Line Award for Human Rights Defenders to Gégé Katana from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Gégé, one of five women nominated for the annual Front Line Award award, works on behalf of victims of sexual violence and founded the Solidarity Movement of Women Human Rights Activists in Uvira, eastern DRC. She is often under surveillance, was banned from travelling for seven years, has been arrested several times and regularly receives death threats.

'Winning the award is a recognition of my work as a woman human rights defender.' she said. 'It gives me the strength and encouragement to pursue my struggle.'

Presenting the award at City Hall in Dublin, before an audience of politicians, business leaders and human rights activists, Bono paid tribute to Gege’s work with a poem. Here it is:

'There’s a woman here amongst us
A girl we cannot know
Eyes from the frontline
Eyes that can overthrow
Eyes that see what is
But more what might be
Eyes with vision over visibility

There’s a woman in our midst
That we can never know
A voice from the frontline
A voice that can overthrow
A voice is more than language
A voice is music too
Her voice is whispering, ‘Ubuntu, Ubuntu’

Ubuntu, a spell in Swahili
There’s no me without you
No you without me
I am because we are
We are what we can do
There’s no you without me
There’s no me without you

The voice says love thy neighbour is not advice, It’s a command
The voice says, Africa is your neighbour land
The voice says the sun rises on our great shore first
The voice sayd dig your neighbours well
And you will quench your own thirst
And if we dig a well together
We will strike a spring of stories
And discover we can’t stand up if she is on her knees

I am because we are
That’s the word ubuntu
I learned this lesson from Africa
There’s no me without you

GEGE, GEGE, iron woman smile
We will walk in your footsteps
And follow your mile
May the dreams you’ve had in darkness
Not leave you when you wake
And like The Morning Tree of CONGO
May you bend and never break

There’s a woman here amongst us
A girl we cannot know
She’s been to the frontline
But today’s she’s home.'

beautiful poetry from our beloved Poet, Bono!!:wink:

Hey I think that's a Product RED shirt he's wearing, (with the chevrons on the sleeve) I saw one just like it at Gap.

So, Ubuntu means "there's no me without you, there's no you without me"?

If it is, then that's beautiful. Can someone explain ubuntu to me? And also who is that beautiful woman next to Bono?

Queen of Jordan is next to Bono.

Isn't strange that people can feel so threatend by a little lady such as this one?

Queen Rania of Jordan is a beautiful woman.

And I don't think he looks bored, maybe a bit tired. I have seen him looking like that many times, maybe he has just returned from the US and is a bit jet-lagged.

I have a feeling Bono is trying not to take the spotlight away from this great lady they are honoring.

Thank you for the pictures!

I think he is looking humbled also, thinking about the serious nature of what this award represents. He didn't ahve to do this, i think it was an honor for him, too. he really cares, no way would he be bored. but- our man never lets us down (posing with Gege in the pix), he always adds a touch of (humor)childs play to a situation, cuz he is real and honest . He sees things from a childs eye sometimes, sees what is right and wrong so clearly. That is what children are - playful, honest and innocent. That is part of what we LOVE and admire about Bono.
