Hotter 'n' hell Texas: Dallas
After No Doubt, the crowd was getting really antsy. My feet hurt like hell from hours of standing! Finally the pre-show music started!! And...WTF?? They were now running so late that they skipped "Higher Ground" altogether and started right off with "All you Need is Love!" Woah. What I found out later was that U2 and No Doubt had not gotten to the arena until 7:15 PM!!! This meant NO time for a soundcheck, which didn't bode well for the show?something we were to find out later. Dallas and the other techs came out to tune (no Mysterious Ways guitar this time, DARN), and some fratboy kept yelling, "Yo! Guitar man!" until someone pointed out that his name was DALLAS SCHOO, you eejit. I could say something about the guy being at a U2 concert and not even knowing the name of Edge's guitar tech?but I won't, though I certainly had a few thoughts going through my head at that point. The minute the Influx remix began the crowd went crazy? when Adam and Larry walked on stage, we screamed more, and here comes Edge, seemingly in a good mood, he was kind of doing a bit of that 'funky chicken' on stage, wandering around, making his neck work, it was hilarious. I think I saw him smile more at the Dallas show than at any other, and he gave the crowd more eye contact than any other show - and I SWEAR he saw me and recognized me from LA3, but who the hell knows. Wishful thinking on my part, perhaps. Finally, WOO-HOO!!! Bono jumped on stage and the crowd went bonkers!!! And the mad crush to the front began in earnest. The show was great, very high-energy, but of the three shows I'd seen this was probably the one that gave me the worst heart experience...the crowd on the floor was pushy and aggressive, full of half drunk college guys and other people who felt it was their right to push and elbow their way in front of me. I started out a mere 3 rows behind the front rail inside the heart, but by the end of the show I had been relegated to the 6th row due to some unruly people. THAT part of the experience I can certainly do without, because it detracted from the joy of the concert!

One girl next to me screamed and clapped so loudly, that I finally had to root around on the floor for a napkin, so I could tear off a corner to stick into my ear as an earplug.

They played most of their 3rd leg standards, but again we were blessed with hearing "Out of Control." Bono even did band introductions - YAAAYYYY!!!! (this time, Edge was 16 rather than 15) Then, wonder of wonders, during the acoustic bit, with Bono and Edge out on the tip of the heart, they completely blew us away by launching into a beautiful rendition of "IN GOD'S COUNTRY"!!! OMG!!! We went absolutely crazy!! (at least I did!) I hadn't heard them do that one since the JT tour - and I was right - Bono said afterward, "This is only the second time we've played that song live in 15 years!" The other being Phoenix last Friday night. So we felt very honored and special indeed.

At one point, Bono reached out to touch people's hands in the front rows when some idiot in the front row, grabbed Bono's hand and WOULD NOT LET GO. Poor Bono struggled in vain to release himself--you could tell he was upset, but didn't break song--so then he finally gave in and stepped out INTO THE CROWD, all the time still trying to get the guy to let go of him. He finally got back onto the stage fairly unscathed but it was a really awkward and weird moment. I was so mad at that guy. Just let the man do his job, people!

However, there were some glitches, due to the late hour they arrived and no soundcheck. Edge's guitar was causing him problems during Bullet, and Edge had poor Dallas running arll over the place trying to fix it. Even with the problems, I thought Edge did an amazing, blistering solo during Bullet that was different from any I'd heard before. Gave me goosebumps. Toward the end of the show, during one of the encores, Bono's guitar and mic were also causign him problems - he went to give a blazing STRUM across the strings in "Walk On" at one point - but no sound came out!!! He was not a happy camper - did a bit of yelling over to the techs to get it straightened out. And if he hadn't been right on top of his mic, we could not hear his voice at all. But aside from those glitches, it was a really great show. I think I'm getting everything mixed up, but I don't think they pulled up anyone to either sing, dance or play guitar with them for the Dallas show, surprisingly (correct me if I'm wrong, Dallas folks).

Stayed at the venue till after till 1:00 AM hoping to see the guys. At about midnight, we got "yelled at" by one of their thickly accented Irish crew members who "swore on his daughter's life" that the boys had left right after the show, and why did we even bother waiting around for them??? Sheesh! I heard from someone else that the band left the arena immediately after "Walk On." This guy was sitting at the light outside the arena (on the service road) and saw 4 limos and motorcycle officers fly by him (four jerks and a police escort!). Apparently they were running red lights left and right (for shame, U2!). He tried to follow them to see where they were staying, but was unable to do so. Guess they wanted to get to Kansas City really quick?maybe they had a hankerin' for some ribs!

Actually, I'd heard they were going back to LA, of all places, then going to KC on Tuesday. Who knows.

Overall, it was a great show...I'll post a pic from the Dallas Morning News along with the article on the show!

Good review. I posted a review over in the EYKIW forum, but I like your perspective from the heart.

In God's Country and Out of Control were definitely treats! And you're right, no one was pulled up to play or dance or whatnot.

Glad you had a good time!

no way, LA???? oh my gosh *calling hotel* must go stalking

LOL no I think I just missed them, it's already noon I'm sure they are off for KC, besides I'm not cut out for the stalking thing. It's too, uhm, weird and I can never go through with it.

Great review, Disco! I'm jealous that you got to hear In God's Country. It's possible that the Edge recognized since you met him and told him you'd see him in Dallas!

My friend and I were right in front of him at one of the 1st leg shows, and she swears that he recognized her at the recent show we went to. So it's possible!

Marina, you crack me up. Hope you find them!

I heard they were headed back to Edgie's place in Malibu, but who knows...everything's a crap shoot with the boys, y'know?

Crap. I need another fix!!!
