This is not the first time I have heard this. It really isn't a bit of wonder some people think that, because of the Village People thing (well known gay bar stuff) the Lemon being the Japanese folklore symbol of male homosexuality(four guys climbing out of it in flamboyant outfits- the way they looked) and the swinging tallywhacker of the transvestite on the vidscreen behind Larry during Popmart. It's these things that give people the impression.
Those who know the band know better of course.
Lilly- no, straight men dance too, but that kind of dance music that inspired much of the album is the type that is prevailent in the gay bar scene, especially in Europe. Unfortunately, it was that sound that caused what Lemonboy is talking about, and that reputation has been hard to live down- especially among teenage boys.(I know some myself!) Tell your classmates to check out ATYCLB and the Elevation tour, they won't have the same impression of the band. Tell them our boys were just playing around with some experimental sounds for fun, and they are not gay (not that there's anything wrong with that and all that!) Sorry, but the gay-YMCA stuff has been a part of our culture, right or wrong, for years now. If you are a high school girl maybe you have never heard it before, but it is out there, and it's stuck in people's psyche. Yes, the real Village People were gay, and to a lot of people, dressing as them did not help U2's image. It may not be right, but that's the facts.
Lemonboy- I know you are straight, and love girls, especially PLEBA girls- even if you do live in a lemon LMAO
