Well gals, I need your sound fashion advice again. I am still putting bits and pieces of my costume together, and was planning on putting on a belly button jewel, similar to what Morleigh has in the ZooTV Sydney vid.

BUT, I did some research on the internet and it turns out that NO respectable belly dancer would stoop so low as to wear a jewel in her navel, this is just something cooked up by Hollywood over the years. (Morleigh! How could you??)

In fact it's a real bone of contention to belly dancers. Here is an excerpt from something I read on the internet (a woman answering a beginner's question about whether or not to wear a jewel):

So the question is, do I wear a jewel because this is after all a ZooTV tribute, or do I try to have SOME respect for the artform and have a NAKED belly? My coin bra does have a chain that hangs down with an adornment just above my belly button, so in a way I don't need it. Maybe I should just apply gold sparkly body paint in strategic places?

Thoughts?

Hhhmmmmnn. I always thought that belly dancers wore jewels in their belly button, but perhaps that was just instilled in me from seeing so many hollywood-belly dancers. I think that it is up to you. I don't imagine that there will be anyone there who is a professional dancer and is offended by the belly jewel, and even if that is the case, then you are just dressing in Morleigh's role, and she wears one. If you don't feel comfortable with it, then that is fine too. It sounds like your outfit will be glamorous enough without it!! Maybe see what the band says.

Sorry, that was no help at all!!!

I agree.

Bwaahaha! I just did a search on Morleigh Steinberg, and the FIRST THING they came up with was:

"Build Your Own Glossary/View Glossaries of Others
... Man Cleavage Man Groove Mirrorball Man Miss Zooropa Moaner Mocool12 Mona Moonie Morleigh Steinberg Mr. Le_Mon Mr. Snarly Mrs. Clayton Mrs. Edge Mullen Girl Now ... www.vodkatea.com/g/glossary.asp?termid=3776 - 15k - Cached - Similar pages"

That struck me as hilarious! Anyway...I will ask the boys in the band for sure. The other problem is Morleigh has NO STOMACH, wheras I have a small gut which may not look good with a jewel.

Oh, and Spinning, Kevin (Edge) wanted me to thank you for saying such wonderful things about the band on here, apparently he has been lurking for some time! LOL!

That's nice. I was really impressed by them and I just want to make sure that they get lots of gigs. I am really looking forward to seeing them live again.

Are you going to JackAstors on friday?

I am pretty sure that it is only one bus from Kipling Station. It is pretty close together, but unfortunatly a few streets away so I am not exactly sure the logistics of it. I am looking forward to it. It should be fun!!

EXACTLY!! LOL!!! Lemonboy, maybe you'd better plan your trip to Toronto, and you can come and see the tribute band instead - and my little pot belly!

Thanks for your input, it was good to have a male opinion too!

That's one more reason why I like European men better than North American ones.

And Mrs Edge, I say go for it ! Like everyone has mentioned, you have the role of Morleigh, and Morleigh wears a jewel. You'll look smashing baby !

Lol. Very true. I think you should. You will rock anyway jewel or no jewel.

I just wish that I had a stomach that I would dare get out in public.

Then you'll proceed to pretend to play the guitar and sing??? (jk!!)

Jewel or no jewel, that is the question. Actually, when I first saw the thread I immediately thought of the coins and thought that would definitely look sophisticated and classy.

LOL! Very true. I guess if you're trying to be as Morleigh-authentic as possible, go for the jewel. I doubt any belly dancers will be around to make rude comments.
smile.gif
But it's up to you- do whatever feels comfortable!
