BBC: Edge attends Stephen Hawking conference

January 11, 2002

Hawking extols joy of discovery

Professor Hawking is recovering from a broken hip

Scientific discovery may not be better than sex - but the satisfaction
lasts longer, according to Professor Stephen Hawking.

"There is nothing like the 'Eureka' moment, of discovering something
that no one knew before," he told a week-long Cambridge conference
to celebrate his 60th birthday.

"I will not compare it to sex - but it lasts longer."

Since 1979, Professor Hawking has been Lucasian Professor of
Mathematics at the UK university, a post awarded to Sir Isaac Newton
in 1669.

"It has been a glorious time to be alive and doing research in theoretical
physics," he told an audience of 200 paying guests - which included
astronomer royal, Sir Martin Rees, and Rock band U2's multi-millionaire
guitarist, The Edge.

"Our picture of the universe has changed a great deal in the past 40 years
and I am happy if I have made a small contribution.

"I want to share my excitement and enthusiasm."

Britain's longest surviving motor neurone disease sufferer, Professor
Hawking was given little more than two years to live after being diagnosed
with the crippling muscle-wasting condition at the age of 22.

He can hardly move and uses a speech synthesiser running on a portable
computer to speak and give lectures around the world.

Hmmm-I wonder if they talked about the orgasmatron.

I canjust picture Edgie in a white lab coat, hovering over bunsen burners, electrical equipment, boiling beakers...wearing his beanie, of course!

GEEKS!!! Disco how could you!?!?! I have a MS in Neurophysiology and a BS in Biology/Chemistry and have worked as a researcher in the past, I never considered myself a GEEK, I always thought I was COOL!

Sweet merciful monkeys Maria!!! I was just going to post about how much admiration I hold for people like Edge, who are constantly on the search for new and different knowledge etc... and then I read your post! Seriously, I only wish I was smart enough to have a degree in... well anything that involves math.
biggrin.gif
I can only dream of being as intelligent as you girl! I'm envious dammit!

Oh yeah, I found a little more about Edge @ the conference:

From The Daily Telegraph:

Edging closer
Edited by Guy Adams

Whom should I bump into at Stephen Hawking's 60th birthday "symposium on the
future of theoretical physics and cosmology" at Cambridge University yesterday,
but the Edge, guitarist for the Irish pop group U2. What on earth was he doing there?

"I am a very interested amateur who wanted to come along and learn something about
the state of the art," he told me, "and so far I have learnt a lot."

Mr Edge was later to be seen swapping autographs with Sir Martin Rees, the
Astronomer Royal.

"I'm a big fan of Martin's, certainly after today," he added. "His talk this morning
(Our Complex Cosmos and its Future) was fantastic."

Ahhh... Brains are so sexy. Especially on a cutie like Edge.

And I say what with all Pleba love, dear (just like the geeks comment!)
smile.gif
Seriously, you make me feel like...well, like a GEEK. You are one smart cookie...and you know us dummies only say "geeks" cos we're jealous! I can't even balance my checkbook!

Strangely, I would love to have gone to that conference myself....I kinda like all that science/hi-tech stuff, it's fascinating.

My PC works about 98%...but I can't make my sound work, BLARGH! And I don't know what the conflict is...i hate computers sometimes....

Condensed from The Las Vegas Sun:

Stephen Hawking Marks 60th Birthday

CAMBRIDGE, England- Stephen Hawking, the star
physicist who has survived a remarkable 38 years with
motor neuron disease, almost didn't make it to a week
of festivities marking his 60th birthday.

Among the crowd Friday was The Edge, guitarist in
the rock band U2.

"I'm more of a fan of his and his subject than the other
way around, but I believe that he does like our music
as well," the musician said.

OK-all together now-AW!!!!!!!!!

Ah-I see where they were now-they didn't have them earlier this morning.

He was there to 'learn some more about quantum physics'. He's just too smart for me.
