BONO TELLS TRAVELLERS TO 'MOVE OUT' OF BUILDING

U2 frontman BONO has ordered a group of travellers to move out of land he is planning to turn into luxury apartments in the Irish capital Dublin. The rocker has tolerated the family setting up home at Britain Quay in the city's Docklands. According to their spokesman Martin Collins, the singer has been visiting the family for a year - even giving their children sweets - but he has now ordered them to move on. He says, "He told us we'd have to move. He was quite nice about it, but we told him we have nowhere to move to."

does anyone know anything more about this story?

No.
We can tell that it's Contamusic's article :eyebrow: because the rest of the news, which would make us understand the whole thing is missing.

Well here is a previous article about the situation. Bono is probably just trying to get things resolved peacefully. He doesn't own that land. Their studios will be in the Tower but the land is owned by the Dockland Authority as far as I know which is why U2 had to give up Hanover Quay. They owned the studio but not the land.

Travellers Hold the Quay to U2's Studio Dreams; Families Won't Move from Docklands Site

Sunday People, November 09, 2003

Stephen Maguire

U2 could be on a collision course with a leading Traveller family over plans for their multi-million euro recording studios.

The millionaire rock band plans for studio on the top two floors of Ireland's tallest building. The skyscraper, which will overlook the River Liffey in the heart of Dublin's Docklands, is expected to be completed in two years' time.

However a well-known Traveller family are putting a spanner in the works for Bono and the boys. The Collins family have been settled on a site beside the zoned land for over twenty years -- and are refusing to move.

Despite at least FOUR attempts by Dublin City Council to move the group on peacefully, the eight families have ignored the approaches. Now insiders fear the only way the impasse will be solved is through a court order.

Last night Dublin City Council spokesman Sean Moran admitted that the Collins family will eventually have to be moved from the site at Grand Canal Quay.

"They are a very proud Traveller people and have been living on that site for most of their lives. But the bottom line is that it is an illegal site. The council have approached the leader of the family, Arthur Collins, with a view to moving on four occasions but each time he has refused. Eventually the group will have to move on from that site and perhaps be accommodated somewhere else," he said.

Details of the skyscraper to house the world's most famous rock band were announced almost a year ago today. Bono, the Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton swapped their studio at nearby Hanover Quay for the top two floors of the planned skyscraper. The other 18 floors of the building, which overlooks the River Liffey, will be rented out to international businesses and will also include two restaurants.

However, so far only some site clearing has been carried out.

Developers have tried to protect the site by erecting wooden hoarding around it. But a number of fires have already been lit on the site of the ambitious plan at Grand Canal Quay. The Irish People has witnessed Dublin Fire Brigade being called to the site on at least SIX occasions. The area which developers hope will become a pleasant riverside plaza is covered in scrap metal, including old cars.

Mr. Moran admitted that this was an illegal dump site and that the council have plans to clean it up. "The families have agreed to move across the road while a clean-up is undertaken. A wall will then be build to prevent any further illegal dumping from happening in this location. This entire area has been zoned for office use. It is not a legal site for the Collins family and they will have to be moved on eventually," he said.

Meanwhile U2's frontman said he thinks the building will be a tribute to Dublin when it is finished in two years time.

"This city has been defaced and vandalised over the years and there aren't that many handsome buildings. Over all the years of supposed financial wealth in the city the architecture hasn't benefited at all," said Bono.

U2 are the first of a number of tenants expected to take up residency in the DDA development.

This is the THIRD time the studio has controversially hit the headlines. Last year we revealed how local residents in nearby Ringsend were opposed to the skyscraper. May Kane, chairperson of the Combined Residents Association of Ringsend, Irishtown and Sandymount claimed the development would dwarf the community.

"Has Bono given much thought to the damage which will be caused to ordinary people's lives by this building? We are the ones who have to live here with this development -- and it's not pretty to be living in the shadow of these huge monstrosities," she blasted.

Another story claimed that judges picking the design for the skyscraper plan, including U2 bassist Adam Clayton, had picked another entry before changing their minds.

it sounds like Bono is doing what he can to try to get the people to move out on their own before the docklands physically evicts them.
I hope they can come up with some money for them to move with, or some land for them to move TO, rather than just forcing them out.
On the other hand, as an American there is a lot I don't know or understand about the traveling community.

rihannsu, thanks for the info. sounds like the problem has existed for a while.

I also want to thank Dana for reviving a very old article that I had put out of memory but which really gives the full scope of this issue.

Bono has done everything he could possibly do for this family.
