Someone tell the story.

It's either this or studying for bio final......STORY it is.....

OK, so Friday around five, Beth (Bonosloveslave) pics up me, Ellen, and Laura and we head down to Kristie's at Purdue in Indiana. We spent the night in the basement of her dorm *watching* the Boston DVD b/c you're technically not allowed to have sleep overs down there......anyway, Saturday morning we left and ended up at the Seelbach Hilton hotel in Louisville, this really decked hotel, like the nicest place I've ever been, but shit, I've been NOWHERE so I don't count.....and we were even on the "special access" floor, hehe! But we weren't there long, just long enough for me to leave a substantial amount of important stuff on the bed. We headed down to the Presby USA headquarters and did a mini-freak out upon seeing three DATA buses lined up at the curb. So we park close by and walk in all looking important like we know we're supposed to be there even though we don't have a clue what's going down. The lady at the security desk wants to know our business so Beth explains that we were advised to come down there and see about getting our names put on some security list for a Jubilee USA meeting that afternoon. Basically, we do a good job of making it sound like we're definitely supposed to be on that list without outright lying to the security. So this lady goes off to find someone of greater authority in such matters. While she's gone, this dude comes in and sits down and he's all "man! this is more work than I've ever done in my entire life! Usually, I just come in a study, I mean, come on, doing security for the presbyterian church......so I'm sitting here today and IN WALKS BONO! Geesh! You gotta prepare a man for something like that! So, I assume you ladies are here for the meeting?" and we say "yes, we are here for the meeting." and he says "you do know what THE MEETING is about? don't you?" and kinda smiley-winks and we say "yes, we do know who is at this meeting." so then we are all on the same page. Finally, this new lady comes down and acts all bitchy at us and tells us to go sit in this other room while she finds someone else. We go sit as directed and start to get the feeling like we're gonna end up in this meeting with like 10 people that actually know what they're talking about and Bono. Then these other ladies nearby start chatting about "the guest" upstairs "banging on drums" and they leave to go watch. Now we are semi-panicking and finally decide to bail before we're in even more trouble. We tell security that we think we're in the wrong place and leave them Beth's cell number. From here we head on over to the Northeast Christian Church where Bono was going to be that night. By now it's a bit after 4 and he's scheduled to start at 7. The security are already inside going through their protocol and we inquire about extra tickets. The men are very nice and say there are none at the moment but we are welcome to wait inside or beg the line. No one is in line yet so we hang out inside. Soon, a man comes back saying he's scored four tickets and is working on the fifth. Then a few minutes later a big guy walks over and slips Kristie five tickets and tells us we're welcome to attend the church's 5 service. We decide that's better than waiting out in the cold so we take a seat. This was a good choice on Beth's part because the preacher explains that ticket holders at the service get to get in line at a special door which opens first. When the service is done, we follow the church people and get in their line. Finally, they let us in and we end up in the middle section, second row behind VIP seats. Beth moves up to the front to an unlabled seat, but the bitchy lady from the Presby building comes over and makes her move to another section. In front of me is the man who funded the DATA tour and his family, behind us are two fine looking boys who are apparently famous. We are trying to figure out who they are, in some group called the Elms we overhear, but none of us has heard of them. Finally, Rocco comes out explaining he's "a nobody representing no one" and then Bobby's turn, the usual spiel about how we need to cheer extra loud for the African kids. Next comes "Grandma" and then the Gateway Ambassadors doing their drums and dancing which is always cool no matter how many times you see it. This time, Wynona is first to speak since Ashley left. Hers is short and she barely manages to introduce Bono before she starts crying. Bono gets up and does his thing - completely different than what I saw in Nebraska, maybe because of the church-going crowd or the smallness of it all. In some ways I enjoyed it more, the basic message was the same, but he gets better at expressing himself. He said "who will be the first to yell fire?" and Beth is like the only one that says "fire" so then he goes into his southern baptist preacher man impression and yells "WILL SOMEBODY YELL FIRE?!?!?" and we get it now and all yell "FIRE" even though Ellen says that's against the law. Towards the end, Bono points out the dude in front of me and hands him the mic. This dude says a few words and finishes by saying he'd "walk through the fires of hell with this man (Bono) any day." to which Bono grins and mumbles something about him regretting that someday, hehe. Chris talks for a short time and Agnes tells her story about her family - her husband got AIDS and eventually she got it too. After her husband died, her oldest son (she had 10 kids) had a breakdown and disappeared one night, she's never seen him since. And one of her young babies got AIDS from her and died when he was six. She had pictures of her family which Bono hold up and shows to everyone. What makes her story so sad is that she always says that her baby died because she gave him AIDS, like the way she makes it sound like she thinks it's all her fault. Wynona has been sniffling into tissues the entire time and this is almost too much for her. I've concluded that the Judds must be very frail women, poor Bono, I bet he's sick of all the PMSing. The African group returns in new costumes and sings/dances/drums their closing song. Then of course it's Bono's turn and he fires up the old school boom box and that mini-guitar he's been strumming. By the end of his song, everyone is on stage singing and dancing. Usually, it ends here, but the African kids have something else to say. It's their last night with Bono and they want to sing him a special song. they all make a circle around him and he picks up Dominique and they sing him the song, I can't remember how it went, but when he sets down Dominique, his suit is covered in her body glitter. Now it's the end for real and we slowly make our way to the back, pick up some stacks of postcards, and head home. :shifty:

:shifty: indeed

Hmm, you left out the part about the Pastor's crack about Calvinists - we're all elbowing each other cuz he says something like "Now I'm not a Calvinist, I dont claim that EVERYTHING is predestined........" - Lies, Laura, and Ellen are at CALVIN College, I'm guessing he would not imagine there were people in the audience from there

Lemmee just say that Purdue is very cool, Kristie rocks for using up so many of her swipes for junk food for us  And I was happy to finally find out about Rocco and Hamish (thanks girls  )

Louisville meeting

Beth and everybody,

Hey! I was there, too, with some other UK Grad Students studying Third World Development. That's cool that some of ya'll go to Calvin College. I go to a PCA (reformed) church in Lexington.

PS- somehow, I went out to the parking lot before the talk and walked onto Chris Rock's bus and said thanks to him, and then after the talk, I was on stage taking a few pictures with the kids and when they started taking the drums back downstairs I offered to help them. I walked right past security and stopped to thank Bono and Wy. And got my picture with them. It was crazy.

But overall, VERY powerful talk. Please help spread the news and get people to send in the postcards. See you,

Nate

very cool, nate. where were you sitting? we were 2nd row in the center left...maybe you were by us. :) you should post your pic, if possible.

btw, i would be laura...
