Excuse me, a stupid question. What is a 'haiku'? Some kind of lyric I can guess, but more official, what's the explanation?

Ok English lesson now Girls... (or is it Japanese?)
Ah hem... "A haiku is a Japanese poem which consists of three lines, containing respectively five, seven, and five syllables. It originated in the 16th century, and was popularized by the poet Basho in the 17th century. Haiku have traditionally taken images from the natural world (eg the flight of a bird) and leave the image suspended in the mind, like a raindrop at the tip of a leaf, so that its subtle allusions and connotations can fire the imagination. The Japanese term haiku is a compound, which is formed from hai meaning 'amusement' and ku meaning 'sentence, verse'." Well something to that nature I think...Just if anyone was remotely interested. ![]() [This message has been edited by Macphisto_esq (edited 10-05-2001).] |
