I've scrolled through a mess of pages, and I didn't see anyone mention this ... or if anyone still cares ...
I heard the reason Eminem didn't perform was that the Academy asked him to perform a "cleaned-up" version of the song, but he refused. I think that's a decent reason, whether or not you like the song. True to your art and all that.
Me? I would have loved to see Babs Streisand on the same stage with Eminem. Definitely something you don't see every day. Hee!
I thought "Lose Yourself" was actually a better song than "Hands" (ow, stop throwing things at me!), but I never in a million years thought the Academy would go with Eminem.
I mean, if they're trying to be hip, couldn't they have gone with the South Park song a few years back? That would have rocked.
Oh well. At least the guys sounded great.

my sister promptly screamned EEEEWWWW!! when the opera part was on, and said bono would be thrown off american idol immediatly cos he sucks. since when is american idol a REAL judge of good music?? and that part kicks ass

it's ok I have that problem too. funny thing is when I write the word edge and I'm not referring to The Edge and I still capitalize it.

Today we listened to Eminem while processing shipment at work. His "music" is a complete negative of U2. He's angry and hopeless and he hates everyone but his daughter. At one point I mentioned he was a "whiny bitch" and pratically had a markdown gun thrown at my head (a violent act which would never have happened if U2 had won!)! Apparently this is how he "vents" and "feels better about himself."
The bully at school stealing milk money from the little kids feels better about himself, too.
The general reaction to his win was, "Cool" which still would have been mine if U2 hadn't been nominated and if he'd bothered to show up to accept his award and at least pretend he cared. the Academy goes pop culture, but what did they do? They gave an award to an angry man who threatens to kill his ex-wife and his mother like it's his job, and let a band all for peace and love and happiness, a band who wanted the award more than anything at that time, go home empty handed and deserving.
The performance was GREAT. I kinda giggled at the opera part because Bono gets so overdramatic it's funny, but that's why I love him.
And Bono still knows where the Academy parks their cars. I think he should make good on that threat. Eminem would do it.

Great screen caps! I never noticed until I saw those pics that he buttoned up his shirt for the performance. I think it was unbuttoned again by the end though, I'm going to go rewind my tape and see if I can see when he ripped it open again

Bono led the pack with wife Ali followed by The Edge and his wife Morleigh Steinberg and drummer
Larry Mullen Jr, who is maried to Ann.
Only bass player Adam Clayton was without a date
for the ceremony, where the band performed their Gangs Of New York anthem The Hands That Built America.
