now THAT is impressive!

So the Japan shows must have been under 20,000 in attendance all 3 nights? I didn't realize they were that small.

Per your values I get an average tour ticket price of $85.80.

For that I think the band should be ashamed of themselves.

I understand charging what the market would bear, but that value for a concert ticket is very high.

The band always tries to charge what the market value is. Given that nearly every show soldout within minutes or hours of going on sale, it appears the band charged less than their market value. In addition, the band gave up about $400,000 dollars per show in the USA, by keeping the 2,000 floor tickets in each arena at only $49.50. It made getting those tickets for general fans more difficult as scalpers poured in to grab the tickets and make some of the $400,000 dollar amount that U2 decided not to make in an attempt to be nice to the fans.

Here is a little bit on that arena they played there as well as a picture:

Capacity for concerts is a bit less because many seats get blocked by the large stadium stage which they apparently were able to bring indoors.

i didnt think hawaii was sold out, and especially not the last sydney show.

Every seat at Telstra Stadium wasn't sold. I saw that with my own eyes - probably about 10,000 empty. I think attendance was likely around the 60,000-65,000 mark.

However, it appears that every seat that was actually put on sale was sold.

I guess the same applied to Hawaii.

Every ticket put on sale was sold, and the figure for Hawaii is now the GROSS record for that stadium. It may also be the attendance record for a single night show. Most people at the Hawaii show said it looked soldout. The Stones played two shows there back in 1995 and had a combined attendance of a little over 54,000 for the two shows. A combined total of 60,000 tickets was put on sale for those two Stones shows.

That is correct.

The single Stones show there was listed as soldout with 58,000 tickets sold. They had seats on the field though, and may not of used some seats in the stands. Sellouts refer to the tickets that were put on sale, not the maximum potential capacity of the venue.

So to take the analysis further, the single highest grossing shows of the tour were in Dublin, with London and Sydney not far behind. For arenas it appears the single highest grossing show was in Auburn Hills, judging by average take per show, although it could be NYC or DC, one of those shows could have had a higher take (although being sold out they are probably all pretty even).

Dublin was the highest single attendance of the tour, with 82,000 tickets sold for each concert.

Barcelona was the 4th single attendance (81,000), behind the 3 Dublin shows

I think thats right. In terms of combined gross for all shows played in one Market, New York City is at #2 with a little over 19 million dollars, just behind Dublin at 21 million dollars.

People say this, but I pulled up seats available in every section apart from GA and the cheap seats after 5pm on the night of the concert. Whats strange about this was for the Monday concerts you couldn't actually pick up your tickets from the venue on the day, you had to do so from the City box office outlet - which I'm fairly sure close at 5pm. Which means there were plenty of tickets on sale - which no one could actually use on the night. Besides, it makes no sense to have not sold the particular sections they did.

No matter how you spin it I can't see how Sydney III was a sell out.

On the day of the show they kept city (and some suburban) outlets open till 8pm. They were announcing it on the radio "Quick! Quick! Last opportunity to see U2!!"

What they do is open, say, another thousand tickets for sale, watch them sell out, then open another thousand etc and keep doing this, rather than dumping, say, 10,000 tickets in one hit. They could claim that on that Monday they only had 10,000 tickets on sale, and sold all 10,000. This ignores the 15,000 empty seats, "but they weren't on sale anyway". It's a trick, but it does in a sense make it technicaly a sell out. Of course if demand was higher, those 15,000 tickets would have gone on sale.

Sydney III will now forever be remembered as a sell out, despite the fact that everyone who was there damn well knows it wasn't.

And for arenas, it appears that Montreal would have the highest attendance for a single show (x2), followed by Auburn Hills and Toronto.

Sting2, where does that put Vertigo tour in terms of attendance? Behind Zoo TV but more than Popmart?

And if I read this right, this tour had the biggest amount of shows played not counting Zoo TV - 131.

I thought The Stones did 30,000 in one night in the stadium set-up? The venue website said they can do 37,000 in a fully seated basketball set-up and 30,000 in the stadium concert set-up.

It also begs the question why they didn't do two 30,000(60k total) shows at Saitama rather than three 20,000(57k total) shows.

Have there been any reports of visible unsold seats in japan?

Yes,

ZooTV: 5,4 million tickets (without any concert in Southamerica)

Vertigo Tour: 4,6 million tickets (with concerts in Southamerica)

PopMart: 3,9 million tickets (with concerts in Southamerica wich represents 450,000 tickets sold)

The industry meaning of "sellout" is all tickets that were put on sale were sold. It does not mean the full capacity of the venue was used. The Stones only had 58,000 tickets sold for their concert at the same venue and it was soldout, because every ticket put on sale was sold. The promoters will carefully release tickets in batches based on the corresponding daily sales level, in order to insure that a sellout under these terms is achieved. It does not always happen, but usually it does especially if the artist is very popular.

Amusement Business certifies the results. This is the way the industry has done it since at least 1977.

Sting2, where does that put Vertigo tour in terms of attendance? Behind Zoo TV but more than Popmart?

And if I read this right, this tour had the biggest amount of shows played not counting Zoo TV - 131.

ZOO TV had roughly 5.4 milion in attendance from 157 shows. Vertigo had 4.6 million from 131 shows. POPMART 3.9 million from 93 stadium shows. Joshua Tree/Love Town had almost 4 million from 157 shows.

The important thing is, nearly all of the vertigo shows completely soldout the full capacities of the venues being played, typcially within minutes or hours of going on sale. ZOO TV did not sellout 25% of its stadium shows, and other shows took more time to fully sellout, sometimes weeks or months.

Worldwide, demand to see U2 live on the Vertigo tour is the highest it has ever been for U2. In addition to the rapid sellouts for nearly every show, just look at the staggering GROSS figure. A $389 million gross compared to roughly $160 million for ZOO TV, $171 million for POPMART, $143 million for Elevation, $80 million for Joshua Tree/Love Town etc.

Have there been any reports of visible unsold seats in japan?

u2fp

The Stones had attendance of 16,800 which is less than what U2 did each night in the venue. I don't know about the max capacity for the venue, but I think nearly half the seats might get blocked by the use of the large stage. Again, it depends on what type of stage is used as well as how the lighting is set up.

Here are the boxscore results for U2 and the Rolling Stones in Saitama Super Arena in 2006.

U2
Saitama, Japan : November 29-30, December 4, 2006 : Saitama Super Arena : GROSS $6,096,855 : ATTENDANCE 57,158 : SHOWS 3 : SELLOUTS 3

The Rolling Stones
Saitama, Japan : April 2, 2006 : Saitama Super Arena : GROSS $2,811,378 : ATTENDANCE 16,800 : SHOWS 1 : SELLOUTS 1

The Saitama venue website has two endzone concert setups:

A)Arena concert setup(nothing behind the stage): 16,000
B)Stadium concert setup(nothing behind the stage): 30,000

The u2 Boxscore have 3 sellouts at about 19k each.

Did the Stones use their "arena" or "stadium" staging?

so basically the are able to manipulate things to make it technically seem like a sell out in order to boost their ego

So U2 what will we do next tour?

Right give europe more shows please. What about 2 legs in europe and 1 big one in the US?

I'll never believe a quoted "SELL OUT" to be a true sell out until they start staying CAPACITY FULL or something similar.

If I hadn't gone back to check ticketek on a regular basis I would never got tickets for a few of the Oz shows through the kosher method. Why do they want to say a show is sold out and prevent someone buying a ticket when they probably know more are to be released later.

For the record...Sydney 3 was fucking amazing despite the fact that a few more thousand could have been squeezed in.
