So - this is a subject I have been trying to avoid, but as it continues, I was wondering if anyone here is 'hearing' the same thing I am.

Back in May I went to a Nine Inch Nails theater show and the Vertigo MSG show in the same week. Since then I have had ringing in my ears - mostly when I go to sleep.

Has anyone else come out of one of these shows with this sound in their head? How long has it lasted? Does anyone have it permanently?

It has been close to 3 months now and I am fearing it is permanent, but I do not want to jump to conclusions.

I know, I know - I should have worn ear plugs, but my seats were not all that close to the stage, and I just hate how those feel...

Thoughts?

I only went to the U2 show and not to that NIN gig. My ears are doing well, no ringing whatsoever.

At MSG my seat was in section 232 (so opposite of the stage).

Good luck.

:( I hope it gets better.

I've never worn ear plugs, but at the April 15th show, I was almost wishing that I had some.

Actually on this tour I didnt go deaf as I normally do which is a bit weird..

I was quite looking forward to it.

perhaps I wasn't as close to the speakers this time.

Yeah, i have it permanently. It varies in volume though and i have learned to live with it. Well sometimes its so bad so that i can´t tell whats what when i listen to music. But then my hearing goes back to low buzz after a few hours.

Protecting your ears is very important.

you can always go to the doctor...

Of course.

And Yimou - thanks for your reply.

I am actually wondering if anyone here has done anything to remedy this if they have it, but from what I understand there is not much you can do...

I feel sorry for you. Ihad that as well a year ago. There is a cure for it for I think 50 percent, at least for me it worked.
First, go to the doc as soon as you discover it. The sooner the better are the chances to get rid of it.
Then I got some infusions (?, don`t know if this is the correct word in english), NaCl for two weeks and it slowly disappeared.

Take care,
dr.dae

Get to a doctor. And if you can, see a specialist who does only ears or only ears, nose, and throat.

I've had two massive surgeries on my right ear, both stemming from a poorly treated ear issue by, of all people, our family doc when I was around 3. One when I was 8, and one when I was 23. Getting in front of this stuff early can be the difference between permanant hearing lose and temp hearing loss.

I wore earplugs for Kings of Leon, but not U2. I went to a show a few years ago and couldn't hear for about two days. It really scared me--everything sounded very muffled, and people at work were laughing at me because I was yelling. Then, miraculously, my ears popped, the way they do when you're driving down a hill or something like that, and I was fine. I usually take earplugs with me to a show, though I hardly ever use them. But it's good to have them in case it's really loud.

I hope things get better for you. I imagine a prolonged hearing problem can be pretty scary.

ouizy - my father has tinnitus. there was a period of almost a year when it first appeared that it almost drove him insane. well maybe not, but he would come home from work and just go to his room and lie down and try to sleep. it really wore him down. he's seen a lot of specialists and done some treatments and now he gets along just fine with it most days but it took some time to get used to. see a doctor ouizy, asap.

everyone else - wear earplugs for every show you see. in the long run you'll be so much better off.

Try using "white noise" as a temporary fix if you are having trouble going to sleep at night. In other words, turn your clock radio on to a channel with nothing but static and it will cancel out the ringing in your ears. Not a cure, but it definately works for me post-concert. Also, certain medications can cause tinnitus, such as aspirin. If you're on anything, check the label to make sure that's not the reason you're having persistent tinnitus. Good luck!

i went to about 4 shows in a two week span, and my ears were hurting for a few days after that period. i just took it easy for the next week or so, listened to music really low. It went away.

Hope it gets better ouizy.

I blew my left eardrum twice in 1999. The first time was in April at the Smashing Pumpkins show at the Roxy. For a good part of the year it sounded like rocks in my left ear. Then it went away, then I saw Bruce Springsteen at Staples Center later that year and blew it again. I had it checked out, and my doctor said there was scar tissue on my eardrum. My hearing is fine overall, but my left is noticeably duller in the upper frequencies than my right ear. Ahhh, the life of the rock fan.

The U2 shows in LA this year were really painful to hear. The audio was pretty bad, which is weird since the Elevation shows in the same venue sounded great.

I can see it now...

"U2 fans sue U2 for loudness"

"Fans of the rock group U2 are suing the band for the loudness of their concerts, making them feel a noise in their heads and ears for quite a long time.

U2's frontman, Bono, refering to the sue, said: I have the solution for that... PITNOL"

My ears were ringing for about 3 days after the gig of Queens of the Stone age, Garbage and Foo Fighters on June 29th. I think the level of loudness was comparable to U2 and/or NIN (it was especially loud during FF set).

But after 3 days the ringing went away. I started to worry, because usually my ears are fine the next day after the gig.

There are different levels of tinnitus (obviously) and different levels of discomfort that come along with it. Most adults have hearing loss from their every day lives. Hearing loss can be caused as easily as driving with the window down.

I severly lost some of my hearing due to ear infections when I was a teenager and spent about 10 years being as cautious as I could, wearing earplugs whenever anything was even a bit loud. I have managed to regain a lot of the hearing, but tinnitus is forever. People have no idea how bad concerts really are for your hearing.

I would consult your doctor for a referal for an audiologist. I would also read through this site, the American Tinnitus Association.

i have tinnitus as well and it is something that, unfortunately, you have to learn to live with. i've found that keeping a fan/air conditioner/humidifier on helps to create enough white noise that i don't notice it. the only time it's terrible is when it's completely silent--and then it's so bad that it drives me up the wall.

while there isn't any know 'cure', avoiding loud noise will help immensely; all loud noise will do is exacerbate the ringing, making it even louder for a short time.

good luck.

I saw U2 in Boston from the floor and didn't wear earplugs. My ears rang for about 3 days, which is much longer than ever before from any concert (including 20 years of U2 shows). I've never worn earplugs before but that experience prompted me to buy a pair. When I go see U2 again in the fall I'll put them in.

Is it me getting older or is U2 getting louder? They've always been loud relative to other bands I"ve seen, but I wonder if Joe O'Herily is losing his hearing and cranking it up. I just don't remember such extreme volume, and they seem to be having more bad sound problems than usual on this tour.

Too bad--I think a rock concert should be loud enough to make you feel the bass in your chest, no doubt, but there comes a point where louder isn't better, especially if the sound quality suffers.

Go see an audiologist for starters, perhaps. Hope you recover.

I thought it would be worse than it was. My ears didn't really ring at all after either concert. I remember the RARHOF parties a few years back when Elevation played for 4 hrs straight, two nights in a row....yeah, my ears rang for DAYS after that weekend...but I was pleasantly surprised to find me ears were fine after the U2 shows. Good luck though, doesn't sound fun.

My ears didn't ring after any concerts, but every once in a while I'll get an isolated, brief ringing in one ear.

I will say, however, that I had to plug my ears during Kings of Leon the one time I heard them from the reserved seats. On the floor, they were fine. In the seats, they really hurt my ears ... and I rather like them, so it wasn't because they suck.

I still have ringing in my ears-I guess my granny was right when she said I would go deaf from listening to that loud music when I was a kid. I sleep with a fan on at night to drown out the ringing.

I've had some ear infection problems too, which have made my ears more sensitive to noise so for the past few years I've worn earplugs to every indoor concert I've gone to. Also finds that it helps smooth out distorted sound, everything sounds clearer. Once I forgot them when I went to a Prince concert and could actually feel my ear canal swell up before I stuck tissue in my ears, then it went away.

I think the only time I was really in pain at the U2 concerts was before Zoo Station when they have the slot machine thingy on the screen w/ the recording of John going "mama!" louder and higher pitched every time. After a few seconds I was like, "aaah! just play the f-ing song already!"

At the end of Love and Peace or Else in Manchester me and a number of other fans had to cover our ears for Edge's solo, the treble was just so piercing and painful.
