On The Rooftop in Japan, tonight

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Crazy how the success of Vertigo, HTDAAB, and the Vertigo tour has really come to full circle. From the rooftops in London (right?) to the rooftops of Tokyo. Pretty cool :)

I so appreciate Interference.com and You Tube ...how fun was that!

On The Rooftop in Japan, tonight

For all you U2 fans in Japan who may not have been able to make it to see the shows, the band will be performing two songs LIVE on the rooftop of Japanese station TV ASAHI, tonight, Friday. The performance will be broadcast live on Music Station which airs from 8pm.

Music Station is the country's biggest music TV show and word is that the band will perform Vertigo and the new single Window In The Skies.

We'll keep you posted.

I'm not sure, but I think this is the link:

Do we have anyone in the house who is fluent in Japanese who could translate the page for us?

I think Bono was the only live performer tonight. The other 3 were just figments of our imagination.

and I think he was only live during the verses

Bono's vocals are actually pretty solid there, but the whole WITS performance seemed overly constructed. It's a half decent song, but here, it looks like one of those promos where they're focusing on not failing instead of letting the song soar. LET IT SOAR!

I kept looking for Harrison Ford to hover over...it really looked like something from Blade Runner.

Blade Runner

Tokyo is on my 'to do' list of places to go... looks awesome.

That WITS video was fantastic, although with the cam they had on Larry it looked like he was in a studio in front of a green screen....

the grave is now a groove, all debts have been removed...

Yeah, definitely pre-recorded, Edge playing the Music Rising Epi Casino, yet the guitar sounds like the original album version on Tele.

Yeah I noticed that too

It's probably not easy playing music on a skyscraper, 15 stories up, in the middle of winter. The cold(?)weather can also do funny things to tunings of guitars/drums/bass - perhaps only Bono had a working mic.

Remember U2 syncing up the Beautiful Day ontop the Clarence hotel in Dublin prior to the Elevation tour? It's on the Boston DVD bonus features.

I'm thinking it may be the only pro-shot performance footage of "Windows" ever to surface.

This strikes me as typical Japanese TV -- the style is to make it sound as close as possible to the recording with a "live" element, in this case U2 standing on top of a building. I doubt very much they could have miked this to perform it completely live, given how uneven the sound would have been, definitely not up to U2 standards. So backing tracks had to have been involved.

Still, it's very cool that they did this and I'm sure the footage will be seen over and over again.

I remember as a young boy when U2 actully played their own instruments. I hope all you youngins get to experience that some day.

U2 mimed as early as 1981, Fire on TOTP.

In fact, there's an early performance of The Fool from the Our Times TV show in 1978 that I'd swear is mimed too.

I think that's the pre-boy TV performance where they recorded the song in the afternoon, then mimed the song in the evening on the same stage.

Maybe they had to comply with some noise ordinance so they just staged it up top and then added the sound in the booth?

He's actually playing a Rickenbacker on the rooftop WITS and a Les Paul on Vertigo.

it is cool...
Edge was definiately singing chorus during WITS

Is it only me that thinks it strange that Edge can play two giutar sounds at the same time on Vertigo, anyone here more then me that notice that it was playback music with live vocals on Vertigo?

It is playback, I'm guessing we're watching the Japanese version of Top of the pops. The vocals are the only live thing, I think.

Man I can't believe Bono would sell out.

What with all his make Poverty history stuff and the like.

What else is fake about you and the Larry Mullen Jr band, Mr Paul Hewson. Are you just another sushi eater like all the others?

For the first time EVER (apparently) U2 gave a live performance of “Window in the Skies” during their Vertigo tour stop in Japan. Bono reportedly introduced the song by saying, “If this doesn’t sound good, blame Edge.” We have nothing snarky to say about this as watching (even shitty YouTube versions of) U2 performances melts our dark cynical hearts.

Selling out in the "The Rolling Stone".

The Edge bow your head in sham.

I don't understand the whole Rolling Stone thing and I hope you were being sarcastic.
As for the "Live" rooftop performance, I believe that WITS was playback, noticed it the first time I saw it, it sounded too recorded, but isn't this normal for a TV show like this. In VERTIGO, I believe, at least Bono's vocals were live. I don't care, it was a great show.
