Australia December 2005

From the Sydney Morning Herald

It is the news U2's Australian fans have been waiting for. The Irish supergroup is set to include Australia in its next world tour and will most likely perform concerts in December next year.

That's the word from a source close to the band, who revealed that plans are in place for a global U2 tour after the release of their new album (believed to be titled Vertigo).

Thousands of Australian fans were left disappointed during U2's last tour, Elevation, when the band did not perform in Australia. (Much of the blame for their absence was attributed to the ailing Australian dollar.)

Until that tour, Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen jnr and Adam Clayton were regular visitors to Sydney. (They even performed an impromptu acoustic gig at the Mercantile Hotel in The Rocks, under the name of the Dalton Bros.)

Their last official visit was for the PopMart tour in 1998.

The band's new album, which is due for release later this year, has been at the centre of controversy in Europe after a CD of nearly-completed tracks was stolen from U2's recording studio in the south of France. Fears that some of the fresh tracks would be posted on the internet appear to be unfounded so far, but if the music is released early it could cost the band (and their record company) millions of dollars in lost sales.

A spokesman for Bono in Dublin confirmed the singer was still overseas last week.

As with most U2 tours, the band is likely to perform its new music in the US, UK and Europe first, before finishing up in countries including Australia.

Although few details have been leaked about the new songs on Vertigo, Bono has revealed to some reporters the CD will have a hard, punk-rock sound.

Congrats Aussie fans! :hmm: December next year...so this should be a pretty long tour, if they start in March. Let's hope South America is played too.

Yeah...I hope they do that Popmart thing again, you know, visiting chille, south africa etc etc, would be cool for the people down there!!
I mean, I'm from holland, and if U2 tours, they are gonna visit holland, that's for sure, so I'm not worrying to much

being from South Australia this is definately great news. But I am still somewhat doubtful that they will come to South Australia as last time they came here (Popmart 1998), they did all the major capital cities except Adelaide :(
On the Zoo Tv tour they came here though. I might drive over to Melbourne with some mates if they bypass me again. Good timing for the tour in Aus aswell, right in the holidays.

they will come to south australia.
since they have been "away" for so long...the demand for tickets will be very high.
PopMart adeliade might have been canceled (was there a date set??) due to poor ticket sales....i mean, after the Zoo TV show at one stage in Adeliade was going to be canceled because of ticket sales, they might have just stayed clear....as unfair for as it might have been for the X ammount of people who brought tickets.

Oh! This is my hope!:hyper:

so these articles appeared recently? July2004?
so when they say "December next year" they mean
December 2005?

sorry guys , might sound like a dumb Q, just trying to clarify
U2 concerts require lots of logistical planning and saving of $$$, so I would like to be sure, to be sure:)
That seems like a long way off, but they are well worth waiting for.
If it is so far away, it may give me the chance to save and see more than one concert.
:hyper:

 December 2005

Is this a hint for the venues? Are they playing arenas or stadiums over there?

YES U2 come to Brisbane! I know it's a hole, but it's near me! Or maybe I will go to Sydney OH Bono where you go I will follow! We deserve a U2 concert here!

Without a doubt, they will play stadiums in Australia. Besides the fact demand is way too excessive for arenas, Bono's voice would not hold up for week-long stands in each city.

This is my prediction for U2's Australia/NZ tour.

- 1 December 2005, Burswood Dome, Perth - I think that's the name anyway. Wherever they played Popmart. It's still there, right?
- 3 December 2005, Unknown, Adelaide - this date may not happen and I'm not sure where they'd play. Adelaide's just not a U2 city, I'm afraid.
- 5 December 2005, MCG, Melbourne
- 6 December 2005, MCG, Melbourne
- 8 December 2005, Telstra Stadium, Sydney
- 9 December 2005, Telstra Stadium, Sydney
- 10 December 2005, Carrara Stadium, Gold Coast - THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN. It's wishful thinking on my behalf because I live really close to the venue. Ignore this date.
- 11 December 2005, The 'Gabba, Brisbane
- 14 December 2005, Lancaster Park, Christchurch
- 16 December 2005, WestpacTrust Stadium, Wellington
- 18 December 2005, [I've Just Forgotten Its Name], Auckland
- 19 December 2005, [Place I've Forgotten], Auckland - I wouldn't guarantee this, but I'm marking it down as a possibility anyway.

With a schedule such as that, they'll be home for Christmas.

Burswood Dome aka the casino is still here, but its pretty sucky. Most of the recent bands ie David Bowie, KISS etc have played outdoor venues.

Ah, I see. Where do you think U2 would be likely to play if they visit Perth?

This is an issue at the moment. The government is investigating into whether they need to build a new venue to attract artists because Perth has been missing out on artists due to a lack of a suitable venue. (The Entertainment Centre is gone) But if this happens it will be well after Dec 2005

David Bowie played the Supreme Court Gardens .

KISS played the WACA

but there were lots of complaints and rules about this venue can only have 2 concerts a year etc.

So who knows. I just hope U2 want to come to Perth AND theyre allowed to have a venue - any venue
